Adding milk means you can brew the tea stronger, it's takes the edge off the taste.
An Indian concoction I think, a habit picked up in the Raj.
Milk goes with strong tea as cheese goes with dry wine. It all depends on the amount of tannin.

I like the sentiments behind this - more and more as I've aged (and matured?) - the less impressed I am with the materialistic culture that seems to be shoved down our throats in ever increasing ways. Sure. I appreciate and enjoy nice things (clothes, design, art, etc)- but there is usually a finite price you pay for anything - and what is paid above that can be termed the "bullshit factor".

Funny thing is because I have worked hard and invested the money wisely over my life I am in the lucky position of being able to afford all the snazzy bits + pieces but in the most I make do with secondhand or whats available , whereas a lot of my mates even older than me are up to their bloody eyeballs in debt , just to keep one notch ahead in that stupid bloody rat wheel
