Yup, it does look like a moonscape after the felling . . . really saw how massive it is on the road from Napier to Gisborne, one timber truck after the other - empty ones (with he trailer stacked on the main rig - amazing) zooming back for another load . . . on single lane roads.

I haven't seen much original forest, though I remember more in the south island

Ok - Napier and Hastings . . . seemingly incredibly dead. Had a lamb and mince pie in Napier and a Jaffa Milkshake - highlight of Napier. (Ah, pay-toilet - 20cents - bastards)

Hastings . . . not even worth the trouble getting out of the car.

Gisborne - Nice, had a great meal at the Fisherman's Club - was told I couldn't buy alcohol without being a member, so the guy next to me bought the drinks and wouldn't even take the money.

Going on vineyard drive today Hic!!!

Thank you, guys -I appreciate your well-wishes. I'm sure it will be just fine, though quite different from our current lifestyle. We'll have to drop our job expectations, income, week-end overseas trips etc.. , but at the end of the day we now look at quality of life rather than quantity. Security and safety rather than haphazard politics and unknown ethnic upheavals . . . cold instead of beautiful warmth - I digress!

So, off we went to the west coast, central north island - wine country.

Stopped by at the following and fell in love/lust with the food and the wine . . . but before we sample the culinary delights, just a brief anecdote.

We arrived in the evening and booked into our accommodation and went to town to get a meal. Everything was full - there was an Anglican convention going on and rooms and eateries were packed to the rafters.
Found a Fishing Club down by the wharf and ordered some good grub - went to buy a wine and beer and was told that we could only buy alcohol if we were members . . . legal rubbish about licensed clubs.
Sigh . . . the guy was apologetic, but pleasant about it. Plus, he was built like a brick shithouse so why argue.
The guy next to me at the bar came to our table a few minutes later and brought us the drinks he had just bought, refused to take any money.

NZ - I really like you.

    So, the wineries . . .

It was cold, the sampling area and restaurant was warm . . .

What to choose . . . ok, let's go from light white to robust red . . .

So, chose a nice, crisp Chardonnay and a meaty red - fish and steak for lunch . . . halvesies with Mrs Hat . . . we very seldom eat red meat or any meat, really, but every now and then - and it was worth it. Warehou and sirloin (organic grain finished no less!!!) it is!

Menu quite nice and varied - price not too much of a slap in the face of the crumbling Ringgit . . .

Fire going in the background - lovely

    Aaaaah, content . . .

Only another few days and our trip here ends . . . won't miss the cold, but it is refreshing not to sweat all the time. Three and half weeks have been worth it

Yup, I think we'll move here!

Will miss the friendliness of the people -seriously, can't beat it anywhere.

    Ok, on we go!

Things must have gone downhill then since I left I remember well enough even tho it was many years ago driving from the ferry drop of and doing close enough to 190 KPH in my tricked up brock 240Z for a couple of hours, but those were days when Hoons were proper.

PP- I have not seen one single person speed, unless overtaking on the highway. Not a single one.

Perhaps they changed the laws because of the likes of you and Ant - bloody hoons!

They definitely have mate. I about poop myself when I go back because I have to learn to drive and obey road rules again after the chaos that is Thailand.

Since I'm usually back around Xmas/New Years they also run these 'zero tolerance' campaigns which basically means that if you're clocked at 101km/h in a 100km/h zone you'll get done.

Couple of few years back I received a speeding ticket in the mail here in Thailand from a speed camera that snapped me doing 104km/h. Cost me about $140 (plus an $80 admin fee that Avis had added for the work it took them to give the police my address/contact details in Thailand... Cnuts)

haha Ant, I hear ya bro!

They used to have a speed tolerance of 10km per hour (not anymore)...

Another pet hate of mine, the pigs deliberately conceal their speed cameras
behind trees, etc.. or at the bottom of hills with steep declines, knowing fool well (with the aid of gravity) vehicles will naturally speed up slightly... inducing us to break their strictly imposed speed limit *ching ching! gain them revenue... nice

In most other countries, this practice is illegal and called entrapment. In NZ it's our national sport (next to Rugby, of course).

Do they not do the Red Nose thing there over Christmas and New Year?. Where you can go out and drink and be merry and then call a number and a sober person comes and drives you home? I know they do in Europe. It works out cheaper than a taxi and in silly life losing accidents.

And taxis are rather picky about drunk passengers.

Cameras are usually hidden, what's the use of having them out in the open? Should they have big arrows pointing at them too!!!

They could have big signs that say "Speed camera area" in order to encourage people not to speed in that area. It works for me!

Trouble is, goody goody sheeple in NZ have taken to believe the propaganda that speed kills in an explicitly literal way.. i.e. if you travel faster than the speed of 100 km hr *even by a fraction of a flies clit, the world will instantly implode on itself in a puff of smoke.

Some have even gone so far as to police the right lane (commonly and legally known as the fast or overtaking lane) by coasting merrily along at 80 km hr, blissfully ignorant as to us behind them plodding along behind the belligerent buggers...

whew!.... needed to release that long, incoherent paragraph... feel much better now :-)

Well, that's what it should be - a deterrent, not an immediate, fund-raising punishment

Well, with increased speed does come decreased reaction time, but there are soooooo many signs along the highways about speed, safety etc . . . it's outright dangerous reading all those signs when you're supposed to be paying attention to the traffic

Speed cameras are a pox on civilised societies, an indiscriminate tax on law abiding people's and an unholy abomination on the right to travel freely about the land.
That being said, if we don't have them all of our children would be mown down by adolescent road warriors and Counsil estate chavs. Lesser of evils prevails in this instance

I agree with both you guys (Stinky and Panama) regarding your point about outright speeding. Of course, I don't mean we should allow race car speeds..

However, what I do mean is they should allow a speed tolerance within a reasonable margin.

Yes, given laws of physics, the faster an object travels, the more the impact when colliding with another impact - I just don't believe speed in itself 'kills'.
I believe human error, misjudgement, miscalculation, distractions, etc
kill in the vast majority of cases, more than driving 5-10 km hr faster than posted speed.

Why is it then, that even with the unlimited speed limit on the autobahn
Germany still has a much lower death per capita than NZ with it's anal speed policy?

Everyone is so petrified of getting a speed camera fine, that no one dares even get close to the maximum allowed speed. So, instead of driving at 100 - 110 km hr on the freeway, everyone is driving along at 80-90 km hr, thus clogging the road system even further.

No one keeps left anymore. It's almost a national sport to police the right lane at 80-90km hr (protecting us from ourselves) causing frustrated motorists to undertake/pass on the left and sometimes causes accidents.

I believe people's driving skills have eroded due to the heavy push at speed restriction - if the rules were relaxed today, people would not be prepared to drive at the 'faster' speed... (ok, that's my theory and I'm sticking to it lol).

Oh, I love my fellow Kiwis, but for the love of God, KEEP LEFT!! ya tossers.

Can't say I've noticed that myself to be honest... But that may be due to watching my own speedo like a hawk to ensure I'm not speeding, to the exclusion of knowing what the fock is going on around me.

In my opinion it's the roads.

The standard/quality of NZ roads is a bit shit (major highways etc. notwithstanding).

Whole bunch of factors really from the material used to seal them to corners even having the wrong gradient/camber.

They used to have those. When the speed cameras were first introduced they were promoted as a tool to crack down on the hard-core speeders. Those doing 120 km/hr or the top 10% of speeders. I remember being flashed a couple times and never receiving a ticket cause I was under that threshold. Then successive governments saw how much money they were pulling in and gradually the rules tightened and now it's another tax on the motoring public.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

Point taken there Ant bro, granted the roads here are shite. All uneven patched and re-patched from council roadworks. Like Frankenstein's arse, or a shattered glass sheep smashed into fragments...

When I returned to NZ after 10 years away, I was shocked at state of the crap roads. I swear they were much smoother before I left. I'm older now, but I'm certain it's not dementia lol

(way back in the day) I used to be amazed at how the Thais kept left on the roads. Even if you were in the 'fast' lane - if someone was behind you obviously wanting to go past, they would pull over... (na rak mak!)... sorry, had to pepper in that Thai phrase, couldn't help myself.

Anyway, back on subject. I love my country, I truly do. BUUTT.... I deal with Kiwis everyday in regards to my business here (I have a bunch of Chinese/Thai, Plasterers, tilers and painters who I sub-contract work to) and make a cut (of course)... In my day to day dealings with my fellow Kiwis, I've come to realize Kiwi women are ........... hmm my mum and nana are Kiwis, I can't say...

fkuck it... many *I estimate 40% of Kiwi women are kunts... us blokes are too good to them and they act more like men, than women.

No, I haven't been scorned by a Kiwi lass and the other 60% are cool as... on a positive note, most Kiwi guys are decent people. My Kiwi male customers are way less demanding and much more reasonable.

Sorry, If I offend anyone. It might only be 5% forget about percentages, it just happens to be true in my own experience.
I generally never work for Indians, I have 1 crew of Fiji Indian painters (great lads) but even they don't even trust Indians lol

I think that pretty much sums up the extent of my racial prejudice hehe...
    Carry on bros!
