South Island, that's where its at; very very nice, I once thought about living the simple life and gold panning in Hokitika, spent the day at it (still have my little bag of Kiwi gold in England)... I only went as far down as Christchurch (very nice place to live), but I've heard it's even nicer lower down although the locals down there can be a tad uncouth...
Cycling should be banned!!!

One for the freezer and one for the pot.
Not really, New Zealand is probably the most deforested country in the world.

There's a lot of hilly grasslands totally devoid of trees, a lot of erosion.
True, now that you mention it - no forests along the highways . . .
Hmmm . . .
^ Once upon a time, it was all forest.
You should be jailed for putting up a pic of Ant!!!!
And yet, from your source
Without the farms, there wouldn't be an economy. And the 4.5 million people choose not to live in tree hutsIn 2010 31.40% of New Zealand was covered by forest. This does not include orchards or trees in parks. This figure has been slowly but steadily rising since 1998.
and from the same source.
Prior to the Māori arrival, New Zealand was almost entirely forested, besides high alpine regions and those areas affected by volcanic activity. The Māori began settling the country about 1000 years ago[1] and reduced the amount of forest cover with the use of fire. By 1840, when Europeans were a small part of the total population, the forest cover had been reduced from 85% down to 56%.
In 2010 31.40% of New Zealand was covered by forest.

The good news is that the NZ govt. has banned any further logging since 2002.
Good Luck PH. With the change of location does this mean you will find a new forum too? Will you do us a favor and take Hairybackwards with you? NZ likely needs some expertise and suggestions from you guys. Link him up to the new register page so you can contribute right away....

After years of wandering around Asia, you're settling down in Kiwiland.
Wise choice considering the kids are at the age when school quality and a settled in lifestyle is so important. The experiences the have had in Asia will serve them well as they grow into adulthood.
Will be quite a change for all after your adventures here.
All the best to you and the family.
