I am not worried about losing my stash.

(I want to learn more about the details of the Aussie Super.)

I assume you can move your funds (or any Aussie with a Super can) to cash with the click of a mouse button. Yes? No?

From the US, so a similar situation, IMO.

I have funds (tax deferred former IRAs and former 401Ks which are crap) in

Various Small Cap, US funds, an large portion in an Asian fund, international

And also Vanguard total stock market Index fund and a Stock - Bond ration fund.

My direct stock holdings are 0 and have been.

Then, I have cash getting 6.8% in an East Asian bank.

At middle-age, I can retire in South East Asia for example at 60 and get by, or work and save longer, which I will.

Of course, my earning will change, inflation happens, the cost of living and the job market.

But your main point and question:

This could be a big correction that will take time to go up again. There is a China bubble. How it affects the rest of the market in the world is above my knowledge level.

The second scenario, is that the gloom and doomers are fight and the over-leverage world, could unwind and we could see years of a downturn.

The suppose the BIG point is: it depends on how long we plan to live.

Terry will be delighted by your heart warming words. It is nice to think he has a shoulder to cry on in Isaan. The third alternative is to go on a diet of fish heads while a resident of the Bangkok Hilton.

Yes, I wanted to and am planning a trip across the US when I quit or lose my present job. I'll need a used van in good condition.

    I remember your cogent advice.

I've driven and traveled across the USA, coast to coast 3 times.

The last time in 2000, my trip lasted 7 months.

Very kind and much appreciated. I have set my sights somewhat lower than most and will be content with a roof over my head in a flood free zone, my dogs, my books and my music. I already have a straw cowboy hat and a blue cotton shirt so I will easily pass for a Khon Isaan especially as I drive my BT 50 around town with my MP3 player blasting out Jintana.

Used to have several mutual funds but cashed them all out except for one which was an IRA. Turned off paper statements for it so I haven't a clue how much it's grown in the past 12 years. Other than that all I have is what is called TSP and I put my 5% in just to get the matching donation and leave it in the safest option which I think is called the G fund.

True story ... Saw a piece of land I wanted in Thailand so I rang up the ex-wife and swapped my last mutual fund with her for cash. That piece of land is worth 3X what I paid for it now.

Now we must try and get a handle on this stuff simply because Australian super funds are different to Dodger and the Septics Super funds.

When a Convict retires his Super fund is transferred into an accumulative plan which means he rolls with the Market. Makes and loses depending on the market.

The other way is a Pension fund were he draws X amount of buks per week.

Many guys would go with this as they need the steady income but I do not so I stay with the accumulative fund and draw out Buks when I need them.

Usually every six months on my trips back to Perth.

So I lost 25 K in one month, that is Governed by what ones pension fund is worth, it's works on Percentages so the less one has the less he looses and the more one has the more he looses.

My fund is very conservative so I would hate to see what the guys who were out in aggressive Funds lost.

Next month will be a blood bath but I don't think I'll be eating bugs just yet.

    The month after that maybe.

I'll post up how much I loose next month.

Bear in mind I'm no orphan here.

I may lose a heap but it will turn around, if not we are all fooked.

Seems like an element of living on the edge Terry, wondering what your monthly income will be if it's equity market dependent. Nothing wrong with that of course, if you can take the rough with the smooth. Real problem is that when it's gone, for most of us there's little to no chance of ever getting it back. A seemingly idyllic and independent lifestyle can turn quickly into a forced return to our respective countries welfare system.

Personally, I'm more conservative. My ex Company pension pays out what it says on the can every month, the only value fluctuation of course being the prevailing exchange rate. The market fluctuations over that last few weeks have done wonders to those of us moving money regularly into LOS, and the forecast is it's only going to get better (wait until the Chinese tourist market starts to shrink because of their economy, as with the Russians, and see what happens to the LOS economy then).

    Good one.

I did some work. I worked in a hostel in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and worked with illegals doing tree surgery, cleaning boats and houses and stuff.

They keep going on strike because the government keep changing the goal posts and trying to mess with their cushty pensions.

Mate of mine is in the fire service started with them when he was 25 and pays £400 every month into his pension. He reckoned that he'd get a lump sum at 50 years old of £100K plus £15k a year. The goverment have raised the retirement age to 55 now and are planning more changes, drives them up the bleeding ladder.

It's only paper. Everyone is down but for me I'm still buying. Divided paying stock. The plan is to retire off the divided and not touch the principal. Im comfortable buying in at current price of certain stocks. I would feel better if it cut in half though my net worth would be half I'd have some years to buy in on the cheep. Reinvest the divided. Foolish to sell now because you've locked in a loss.

When people are fearfull be greedy when people are greedy be fearfull. Warren Buffet.

In reality don't sweat the small stuff. Could be worse could be dead. My gf worries of the vultures hovering over my stack when that happens. I've heard some real horror stories in that regard.

Have an ice cream while playing with your new tablet and do some mall walking while you can. Hell Terry do another great picture thread of your travels. Turn off the news for a while things will be alright.

Personally, I got ripped off by the Oz supper scheme, there is no Government guarantee.
First one was a private prison, correction corporation [USA] they went broke, they used the pension money to invest in their own business.
They opened up under a different name [company] shortly after and got government contracts.

Next was government prisons, service based pensions, now they were handed over to private funds, 2009 lost most of it.

I cashed it all in at 55, got less then I contributed , it's a con, you have no control, monies theirs, win or lose.

Promises made, soon forgotten, brother lost $300,000 in less then a year from his safe pension plan.

Today it's work till you die, or live on baked beans and dog food.

That sucks James. I recall the Enron debacle. People lost everything they had invested. Lots of people lost their houses in the last bubble here as they were in way over their heads.

Abe Lincoln said that you can't have sound security on borrowed money. The only certaintys are death and taxes. I hope the sun shines on you today. Good luck with your rubber farm.

About 5 years now, not done a days work, 2 very bad years now, but we get by.
Tomorrow, who knows, it would be a boring life if things were certain.
Only real worry is my kids future, can only hope the world is a better place in years to come.
