    ANZ Bank now in Bangkok

Spotted this sign today on Silom, I have my Visa cards with ANZ. I wonder if this branch is any use to us Aussies that deal with this bank back home.

    What do you Reckon ?

Nope. They will be a completely separate entity and will entice you to open a local account (with proof of residence as per the new laws in Thailand).

Same with all of them I think - citibank, hsbc etc. This 'world's local bank' stuff is a fairy tale.

I do not bank with them, I only have my two credit cards with them. Long term now.

I always go to their office in Fremantle when home to report my cards for my onwards travel.

Long term staff here who have been brilliant to deal with every-time.

No complaints at all with this Bank. In fact they save me a nice wedge of money on my Travel Insurance by using their Platinum card.

6 months free Travel Insurance, works in perfectly with my Bi-annual trip back.

yeah. I go from ANZ to ozforex.com.au, make a trade to THB then ship to my BKK bank account, no fees and very good rate. Would be nice if the banks could offer the same deal.

The Thai banking system is a blatant cartel- foreign banks just plain cannot compete in this rigged system. Even HSBC packed it in here. Perhaps, one day, it will change (for the betterment of Thailand)- but I'm not holding my breath. ANZ is here as part of it's 'pan-Asia' strategy, but they know full well it will only make a loss until such time as the system changes. Perhaps they are taking a long term bet that Asean will gradually grind these cartels down. As someone who has witnessed this country deteriorate from the top of Asean to the very bottom within a decade, entirely through it's own 'efforts', I must add the obligatory warning. TiT.

All banks are. Thailand give you a better deal here. For example net banking is instant, they don't hold it overnight to scrape fractions of pennies in interest. XE rates are also much, much better than back home, fees are lower, etc.

Some of the Lao banks here have been offering spectacular interest on fixed deposit terms in kip, up to 16% I read yesterday that the government has told them to bring it into line with the rest of the world by August, punters will be lucky to get 3.5% then

Even in the best of times [however that might be defined], the Thai banking syndicate functions counter to accepted international standards -

Frustrating for those who might recognize their misdoings and downfall.

Might keep in mind, that three of the most important financial institutions/banks are wholly owned/controlled by a revered influential family....and therefore call the shots regarding other banking operations.

    The crux...

I had an HSBC account set up in Aussie dollars in Manila in 96, that's what I was paid in at that time, never had a problem with them, have some mates working in Lao and residing in Bangkok that found it easier to fly to hong kong to set up dollar accounts with HSBC in order to purchase there condos, sounds like a lot of fucking around to me, seems to have worked for them though

I had an ANZ bank account in South East Asia for about 3 years.

    Awful.

A bizarre 2-savings account system to get your money from ATMs, regular fee changes and also a couple of fee raises.

Also, a teller tried to short me $50.

After the last fee hike, I went down the street to HSBC, opened an account in 15 minutes and have been very happy.

HSBC is easy and fast, low to no fees, and I have a credit card with them and an interest term account.

    Just my experience.

ANZ and HSBC are so different, bad bad to great.

Ten years ago in the Middle East they pretty much decided to stop bothering with account holders with less than half a million dollars or so as they were making money hand over fist.

I already had an account with them and their sloth, disinterest and general snottiness was unbelievable.

I wasn't at all surprised when it was revealed they had been involved in all sorts of naughtiness, especially in the U.S., and have had to slash jobs and pay eye watering fines. Som num naa.

    C***s.
