    The Death of Print Media

I found a few old National Geographic magazines today in a box with some old photographs. Got to thinking about my childhood. We were a house of readers. We had subscriptions to Time, Newsweek, Life, Paris Match, National Geographic, The Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest, The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Sunday morning battles over who got which section of the paper and when, trading Time to one of my siblings for Newsweek, doing the vocabulary quiz in Reader's Digest, checking out Nat'l Geo for tit shots.

No more.....I presume these (or some of them) still exist, and can be accessed on-line, but it just isn't the same.

I imagine other posters will recall periodicals from their childhood, many of which I may not recognize as my list is admittedly primarily US-focused.

I received a Lifetime Membership to National Geographic when I was 16. Think my parents paid a whopping $100 bucks for it and it's really paid off. Followed me all around the globe and seldom missed a copy. It's still a great magazine today as it was when we were kids looking at nekkid African women! The most recent issue deals with the planet (or sub planet) Pluto.

    I know the feeling DK

Funnily enough over the last few years I have gradually gone from having to buy a paper first thing EVERY day to a punter who only buys a Saturday paper mostly for the TV supplement inside , the missus likes to read whats coming up in the next week soaps , and I like to glance through the schedule to choose which 3 programs I will watch .

Up to date news is accessed via my smartphone now

I also buy + sell more or less anything I deal with now , whereas in the past I used to use small adds in the local papers .

Its also a bonus not having to deal with the paper waste every week.

The one mag I do buy ( most ) months is International Artist £5

    I agree , I am glad I don't own a newsagents shop
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

My parents had subscriptions to Life, Reader's Digest and National Geographic.

I was a big fan of Mad starting in 1957. I loved their cartoonists and got me started on the path of being a commercial artist/designer. Later in life I actually got sued by William Gaines, the publisher of Mad, for using his trademark in an illustration.

    Did he win the lawsuit?

We had subscriptions to National Geographic and Reader's Digest. Dad would buy a Mad Magazine every month for us kids. (Sure, Dad!) It was our favorite.

We had Reader's Digest too, in the loo...

& all the Xmas football annuals that piled up over the years.

I also miss the glossy Xmas editions of Razzle; can't beat print media.

Without overdoing the working class thing, we simply could not afford things like magazine subscriptions. My parents were born in the early 1920s and wer e both intelligent and articulate.
My print media experience came from the Daily Express motoring columns and later, the copies of National Geographic and Readers Digest found in the doctors and dentists waiting rooms.
As an adult I subscribed to NG and Yachting Monthly, and more recently The Spectator.
During my service career, especially when I was based overseas, The Sunday Times was my guide to world events.
Part of my 2005 degree course was a regular session on Experiential Learning which we dubbed 'Coffee and Papers'. Sifting through a weeks worth of newsprint and picking out debating materials for global stories on how the other half lives and learns.

And to think just the other day my good Bud Bert was telling me here that he'd help me out with any online 90 day questions?

What happened to our Love, Bert?

A great value of any era!
    Lifetime subscription - $100.

Mind you, NG has always enjoyed assorted government subsidies and corporate foundation maintenance since their inception.....prime reason for their survival within the diminishing print world.

I think it's a good thing. We are deforesting the planet at a rate of knots anyway, but at least a decline in print consumption will slow it down a bit.

    Yes....and then there is that.
A worthy and valuable comment, Harry.

You're missing the larger picture, Mate.
It's all about mindless, needless, blinded consumption and production - fuck the consequences.
