Was ' semi retired' and got my deck hand license training and seaman's book paid for by Centerlink at local college in Cairns.

Very comprehensive and rather fun...had their own trawler..training included firefighting, life-raft exercises ( "don't worry about the sharks lads.. crocs have eaten them all" as you try to into the frickin life-raft) ,boat maneuvering , navigation, use of radios, radar, engine, boat systems maintenance and repair etc etc. A lot to absorb even though I had been sailing for years!

I understood you needed the latter before you can go on to get coxswain/skipper license which was my intention.

I joined the volunteer coastguard ...some good training there also.

Suggest you buy (was $45),beg borrow or steal a copy of 'Australian Boating Manual' Capt Dick Gandy. It was or is required as the course training manual..contains tests etc..read it..it will either boost your intentions or put you right off...lol

Thanks so much for the info! I would not mind getting the deckhand cert first if its a prerequisite to get onto the coxswain course. Sounds like it provides invaluable knowledge! My concern is getting the required hours of sea service in a position that counts towards the certificate. Not sure if I would be able to obtain that in a volunteer organisation or with the training provider. I dont really think any commercial boats would let me on without a cert!

Ha-ha..Hope you are not claustrophobic…was just thinking about the fire fighting training. The hoses and foam and fricking great gasoline fires was fun…however they had this building with narrow crawl only winding passages into which one had to crawl for about 500 meters wearing breathing apparatus on a treasure hunt for various objects…all in pitch darkness. A couple of classmates dropped out…

I will definitely get that. Are the tests hard? Wonder what the passing rate is like

Nah I have no problems with confined spaces, was a combat engineer in the army for 2 years. Sounds like fun! Was your training residential?

lol..no had a beuat beach front house which my spouse abandoned as 'boring' and moved back to Melbourne.

    More stuff:
    More?
Never ever assume that we can ever know or learn more about all things nautical.
Was sitting aboard a pretty 34+ foot wooden boat with an ‘old salt” of maybe 65 yo who had crossed all the oceans of the world ...
Drinking superb tea ( just sailed in from India)...Served by his busty Thai first mate.
Obviously got to talking about boats the ocean, weather and marine stuff. I mentioned the paddle wheel effect of left and right hand propellers….he had no knowledge whatsoever and all but suggested I was an idiot…shows to go yah?
