This thread is about world slavery

The 'former slaves' of the title are the slaves photographed in post 1, all former U.S. Slaves, so this thread is about U.S. slavery.
Threads do wander and develop though so no problem.

The Irish slave thing is interesting though. I can't imagine they'd be very good slaves though, always nipping down the pub for a pint of guinness.

by the way, when posting videos if you remove the s from https in the link it won't screw up the page

My belief is that they're not eligible for the American dream because the American dream is one of leaving the repressive old world with nothing and making good in the new world. The American dream is and was a dream for immigrants. The slaves were taken involuntarily, not immigrants hoping for a new and better life, there was no American dream for them. They were kidnapped from their villages, brutalized, and delivered into hell. That legacy lives on with their descendants and in American society and culture.
Not quite so simple Bob. In the 1830's more than 8000 poor Irish immigrants lost their lives to yellow fever, cholera and accidental death during the building of the New Orleans canal.
Irishmen were used as expendable labour as opposed to Slaves who were worth over $1000. A dead Irishman was free to replace.
The Irish still took advantage of the American Dream.
What an uttery stupid thing to say.
Yes it is so simple iceman. The Irish could have chosen not to work on that project if they so wished. The slaves not if they were told to.
Apart from which any hardships the Irish may have endured doesn't lessen the slaves hardships. And as bob said. The slaves were kidnapped and delivered unto hell. For whatever reason the irish came, they came of their own free will and could choose where to work.
Why the fuck would you bring the Irish into it FFS?

Indentured servitude was what it was called, and it applied to many nationalities, Europeans in the east, and Chinese in the west. Many of whom were kidnapped.
While the roots of American slavery were in Africa, for decades before the civil war it was illegal to import slaves. Generations were born in the US and hundreds of thousands if not a million, were not under the confederate banner, but in the north.

IMO It was the north's post Civil War decades long retribution by continual use of blacks to incite hatred, ( polling tactics for instance ) that has them still marginalized today.

Please do not automatically discount liberal thinking or associate it with disturbingly conformist PC attitudes so well represented on this thread.
Liberality, the notion of free thinking, is the essence of change.

Dunno, but when anyone states figures as specific as this (28% of free slaves...) on something like this it makes me suspicious.

Hannibal Ghaddaffi, the son of, was arrested in a five star hotel in Geneva a few years ago for keeping slaves or servants. They ran away, and it was proven that they were beaten. There is a yoo toob video somewhere that shows how the security of the hotel saved them.

Good for them to have stood up for themselves. I hope they are ok now.

It goes on and on, and sometimes is very or too much to read.

There are numerous UN diplomats that move to countries with their wives and children and maids. Those maids are treated worse than a dog.

Diplomatic immunity - Fuck them. Sometimes, when you see the pics of those poor girls beaten and whatever. It makes me sick to my tummy. All they wanted was to send money home to their families. And they couldn't because of some bitch or bastard who beat them.

    Saddens me so much.

Why should i start another thread about slavery?

This one is just about livable. I haven't looked at many of the links. Because i have read and know what went on.

Seeing the slave caves in Africa really brought it home. You feel humbled and angry at the same time. And you can feel some sort of "ghosty" feeling in there. It was a very sad day. But something everyone should see and experience once in their life. The ones we saw in Zanzibar were right down by the sea. So they would be put in there from up top and the boats would come and take them through a sort of metal door onto the boats. The shackles were still there. I am not superstisious but i felt something in there. A sort of evil. And my sister did as well, we are not religious or nuffin.

Like going to the Nazi death camps. Not a fun day out, but should be seen to be believed. But some people say they don't exist.
