Sad day for beer's true believers, as Darwin Stubby farewelled

The Darwin stubby is not in production anymore

A devoted gathering of beer drinkers is bidding farewell to the Darwin Stubby - a huge and, in the Top End at least, iconic bottle that is going out of production - at a wake held in an Alice Springs steakhouse.
The Darwin Stubby was created by Carlton United Breweries when it began brewing NT Draught in 1957.
While more recently made Darwin Stubbies hold a mere two litres of beer, they originally held the equivalent of six regular-size stubbies.

The company's website said the oversize bottle was used because of the logistics of shipping bottles such large distances.
The brewer has since decided to stop producing it.
The wake commemorating the life and times of the Darwin Stubby was held at an Alice Springs steak house.
Restaurant owner Wayne Kraft said he was holding the event because, "Darwin is still in mourning".
Mr Kraft said he was encouraged to hold the wake by former Northern Territory administrator Ted Egan, who is famous for turning empty beer boxes into musical instruments.
"It is a sad day so we'll shed a tear in our beer, and Ted's going to reminisce and maybe sing a few songs," Mr Kraft said.
Mr Egan said the Darwin Stubby was a great tourism device, and he often took one along on official visits to promote the Territory.

For all my time in Darwin I never came across a Stubby that size, always thought they were around 375 mls, imagine the size of the stubby holder for that.

Corona used to do the same thing...listed on the bottle as "familiar" size. (Literally family size). Mexican day laborers were the only ones you'd see drinking it. Somehow the wife and kids never got a sip :-).

Where on the beer scale would you rate that Ozzie beer?
Say if Bud is a 1 (on scale of 1-10) and Corona is 8 or 9 (or substitute Trappist/Duval or your own favourite).

Well, so far no ozzies are shouting me down to say that this beer is waaay better than Bud...Bud is the beer that you drink if you're going to a 4th of July picnic and have to go in afterwards and do a 12 hour nightshift. You can drink this piss all day and not feel a thing.
