Why a foreigner would immediately jump on the "let's feed the corruption monster" that exists here is beyond me.

It doesn't matter what it cost to get the same thing from your embassy.. Why would you 'tip' someone to do their job?

Boon Mee, just how long have you been here again?

You do know that those "Brandz" baskets routinely have fat envelopes of cash tucked away under the crap sludge in those snazzy little boxes? That's why they give them in baskets, even though you can buy the same thing cheaper in cases. It's easier to include the pay off in the basket.

Sheesh, "lob" did you thai g/f help you write your post? This is actually an internet forum, not F/B, Twitter, Line, or WeChat. It's okay to actually spell out words and use capital letters. Just a question, hows it working out for you here if all you're doin' is hangin' around people with the mentality of 4 year oldz? Bet it makes you feel superior doesn't it?

Believe me I have my feet firmly rooted in the "thai bashing" faction on most forums, but I have found that rank-n-file thaiz are no more corrupt, immoral, (insert your negative personality trait here) than people of ANY country, even though the corruption here may be more "in your face".

In the tourist areas thaiz who make a living off tourists are mercenary, calculating, shrewd, and cunning to the n-th degree, they'd just as soon cheat you as talk to you.. However, it's that way in ANY tourist area in the world. The locals prey on tourists because they are a commodity that is by its nature transient. They come, they tour and they leave. Go to any tourist spot in the world and you'll have people conning tourists..

Anyway, that's all I'm gonna say about that...

    That is great.

The transformation of a society from backward corruption to progressive accountability has to start with small acts of honesty at the grass roots as well as governmental procedural reform from the top.

(also a 1000 was a bit much for a signature witness - I thing 200 would have been more in the ball park!)
I don't know. the British embassy charge about 3000B.

Must say ive never had a government officer ask or expect a bribe for simply doing their jobs. I understand that in the 70's it was routine... but not for the last generation or two.

That is not the premise Mr wannabe LOS expat.

I accept the fact that ‘tea money’ is a way of life in Thailand.
My post is about an exception to this ‘fact’…..surprise? ..a bit I guess.

If ever you arrive and expect to “make it BIG” here in Thailand as you have said, and you are still in denial of this fact then perhaps you are being rather naïve and things may just be a bit difficult for you.

Make it big in Thailand? Oh my friend you don't know the half of it. I fully intend to make it big BEFORE my plane lands in Thailand. In fact I already have. LAND OF SMILES is already well known. Wouldn't you call that a success? ?

    Rubbish. Utter rubbish.

Try slipping 50 to the person at the DMV to get your license . . .

Go to immigration in the US, Oz, France, Germany etc... and try to get your visa by offering bribes.

    Living in tropical denial-land, really

In 'first-world' countries it's more of a 'stealth' type of corruption where a lot of it goes on behind the scenes from general contractors to aldermen, city councils etc.

In countries like Brazil & S. America for example it's a little more aboveboard.

Yet, many don't have the ability to figure this out logically - predictably using a broad brush towards all.
