Probably holds more weight in today's world than such rightful words did back in his day....

I believe the likes of Mark Twain, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, and Bertrand Russell expanded on this challenging ditty for modern times.

As a species, we're so easily taken and deeply conditioned.
There are loads of historic examples up to present day.

    Manufactured for and by them.

It hard to gauge the benefits of patriotism to any particular country, but it is universally good for the manufacturers of flags and bumper stickers......

Nothing wrong with being a patriot- but plenty wrong, in my observation, with people that overtly call themselves Patriots. Lemme think now, that would include the German & (more recently) Ukrainian Nazis, the far right Teabaggers, Japanese nationalists, Thai yellow shirts/ PDRC/ ultra- Royalists, EDL- you get my drift.

Religion, politics & nationalism- if you wear them on your sleeve, you are part of the problem.

Lest you forget the natural path of militarism that binds all these aspects with one another. The common thread....

A very misinterpreted quote. It means if you are a scoundrel, your last refuge is patriotism.

Patriotism is largely indoctrinated into people by the state through their education system and the media, it allows governments to get the populace on side no matter how immoral and abhorrent the actions of that government are, when individuals commit crimes under the banner of patriotism they are still criminals in the eyes of the law, unless of course they are working for the government in which case they are loyal subjects/citizens.
Patriotism manipulates the populace into allowing or participating in psychotic acts of violence and believing it's ok because it's their patriotic duty.

    Patriotism isn't politics-dependent at all.
