    Thai and maths

If you ever wondered why a Thai has to use a calculator to add up 25+10 baht have a gander at this 'University' test paper. Friend of the mrs sent it her as she could not understand the maths, mrs could not understand either and got a bit irate when I said most 7 year old's ought to be able to do it. I had to read it twice as I thought it must be some sort of trick questions. Some of the other comprehension ones were a bit harder but not by much.

Perhaps if it was in Thai the missus would have better success.

My son is 13. In our last conversation he said he was doing fractions.

Bet it's the same when her monthly salary from you is short a baht or a minute late.

I was in a restaurant last night and the owner is also dabbling in real estate sales. She was telling me "We can buy this property with six houses for 22 million baht and I think we could easily sell each house for 3 million baht". I tried to tell her that either she'd have to buy them cheaper or sell the houses individually for more but I don't think she understood the problem.

It's an English exam. What do you think you can discover about someone's ability in maths from their knowledge of the vocabulary for fractions in a second (or third or fourth) language? This may be a tricky question for you so let me help you out. Fuck all. On the other hand, there is quite a lot you can tell about someone from their inability to spot this rather obvious fact but I'll let you work out just what that is.

You don't think a University student who can read English should know that a half is 50%?

Just because one can read a language, doesn't automatically mean that they understand it.

For example, you can probably read basic French, Spanish, Italian, anything written with a Latin based alphabet. That doesn't mean you understand them though, does it.

    Some posters really are thick.

The fact that it's a question on an exam doesn't mean that they can't answer it; if you couldn't answer any questions on a test, it wouldn't be much of test, would it. Plus, the students are also being tested on first conditionals so they are almost certainly pretty weak (probably elementary level).

Well, people usually marry at their own level so that may very well be your experience.
