    Sixty and Nuts

Finally had the dental crown put in after the root canal, dental surgery, healing, and prep. The dentist discovered another tooth with a crack and asked me if I ate nuts. We then had a nice talk about how she went to dental school and completely started avoiding nuts as she has seen so many cracked teeth. She cautiously said to me that since I am close to sixty, nuts aren't really a good idea. I think she is right, but I am not giving up my cashews.

Could put them in a bag and smash them with a hammer and then eat them with a teaspoon!

So, like make Gerbers baby food out of them and make sure my nappy and drool cup are firmly in place, eh? This getting old stuff really sucks.

They have this common nut here called the Tua Baagh Ahh which translates roughly to "wide mouth nut." They are quite hard and I am fairly certain I cracked that tooth one of them at some point. They are off the list now, unless I go the Gerbers baby food route.

Exactly, and then pour your Chang Classic into one of these!

Strange as how I've witnessed so many Thais opening beer bottles with their teeth.

I never tried. Maybe my Mom taught me to use a bottle opener at an early age.

much like the rest of the human body, teeth cannot do at 60 what they could do at 20.

their structural integrity will have been compromised by a lifetime of accumulated fillings and root canal work, a missing tooth or two will result in increased loadings for the remaining teeth and the increased brittleness that comes with age deprives the tooth structure of the flexibility necessary to absorb the immense forces generated during mastication, just like the metal fatigue in planes and other stress bearing machinery.

chewing on almonds and brazil nuts etc. is almost certain to eventually result in a fractured tooth.

if you want to avoid expensive and complicated restorative dental work, its prudent to accept the reality of ageing and put your nuts in a coffee grinder and then sprinkle onto yoghurt.

I put various nuts in a blender and make my own nut paste. It's great spread on toast.
I usually have to mix in either water (with honey added....not just for sweetness, but as a preservative) or olive oil to make it into a paste.

60 is quite alright. If you find yourself eating nuts at 69, it's already too late.

I remember splitting a tooth half-way up the Everest Base Camp trail a couple of years ago. No dentists there, unfortunately. Had to wait until I got back to LOS a couple of weeks later to have it pulled. I thought, well this is cool. But they don't use nitrous oxide here. That made it a compounded fracture.

Cashews are absolutely the king of nuts and go fooking great with beer. I was reading in the (Irish) Daily Mail t'other day that nuts provide the same "good bacteria" that you get from yoghurt.

Stay away from tamarind seeds, they're real tooth crackers.
