We have a rather large, what I thought impregnable security safe at home where my wife keeps a few of her documents and others.

She had to take a chanoit out but could not find the code document nor remember the code.

She called a safe company in Pattaya and asked if they could send someone to open it and they asked for the Safe Brand and the serial code stamped on the back of it.

She duly gave them the details and within 20 minutes they called her back saying they have the code and she should pay 1,000 baht and receive it when she goes to their shop.

She went to their shop, paid the 1,000 baht and they handed her a computer print out with the code clearly highlighted.

She returned home, used the code and the safe opened immediately.

She only then informed me that the safe was open and told me the story and that the shop hacked into an internet security system to get the code.

Now how the fvck can they do that?

Davis you are a security expert. I no understand!

I dunno LT, but we have a safe down south that both of us forgot the security code for. Called the company in, took about two minutes and 500 bht to sort it out.

At a guess, maybe some sort of override code? Known only to company personnel and hackers.

Sorry LT. No clue. I'm not a tech guy and when we had tech work (rarely) I contracted it out. Some of the board's computer guys could answer this, I'm sure.

What really astounded me was the speed and ease that they could google the code.

I told my wife to change the code and she said she could not as it was pre-programed at the store she purchased it in Bangkok.

I also reminded her they now have her address (buy way of the telephone call) and that she should remove all valuables from the safe and store the same somewhere else.

I'm sure Sabang is correct, they just popped it with an override code.

If your wife is correct and they pre-programed the code at the store and the purchaser can't change it (which sounds very strange to me), then she purchased a big box.....

Another reason I only use dial safes vice electronic key pads.

Try Googling the safe brand name and model number and see if they have instructions there on resetting the combo.

My safe needs a code and a key to get in it to pinch my passport, snide Rolex and 500 baht fortune

are you sure you weren't supposed to change the factory issued code after you bought it?

Inside the safe was probably not a good place to leave the security code document (in case the code was ever forgotten).

Not think to much, big brother have a camera in your bedroom as well.

Hence I never feel secure leaving my valuables in a Hotel Safe.

A shonky owner or employee can pop it open in a milli-second.

I was not there when she purchased it but she told me they gave her a key pad and she typed in the secret code number.

More than likely the bar code of the safe is the key to the key punch code needed for this specific safe LT. Model number plus a I.D. number no doubt. BTW, keep your copy of the safe code in a different location...

My safe is a dial type and requires a key to open once dial code is completed...two sets of requirements. Memorize you code.

Sounds about as secure as locking the front door of the house; leaving the key under the flower pot and putting a note by the bell to say the key is under the flower pot.....

There was a woman who lived just down the road from us when I was about 12, and she actually used to do this....I kid you not......

I'm surprised that your wife didn't lock the master key inside with the code? Or did she?

No, formally she could open the safe with the key only but we had a break in about 2 months ago, lost nothing but believe the thief tried to open the safe by twidling the code keys.

^My safe requires both dialed in code as well key to open not an either or situation.

^ As mentioned above she could open the safe with the key only and if she did not mess with the code keys after closing the safe.

That is why we suspect the thief must have messed with it making the key only opening inoperable unless you dialed the code in.

Still no clue from anyone about how this random shop could go on the internet and find out the code.

Maybe they used an amulet??

Safe model number and open access to source codes of venders as I assume your wife went to the original dealer? Dealers should be given these codes by manufacturers. I'm sure this happens a lot here.

I'm sorry I missed the part about leaving the code intac eliminating its requirement. Not to secure was that? You have more than one key and it is held by you? Not in a safe place no doubt.
