Wrong-Way Phuket Pickup Pair Pay for 'Ghost Ride' With Their Lives

PHUKET: Two men in a pickup being driven the wrong way on a divided road on Phuket died when a SuperCheap truck crashed into their vehicle early today.

Although SuperCheap trucks have an abysmal safety record, police blamed the driver of the pickup for ''ghost-riding'' the wrong way and colliding with the truck near Sai Keaw beach, north of the Tachatchai Checkpoint and close to Sarasin Bridge, about 4am.

It's not known whether the pickup had its headlights on or where the vehicle was heading.

Rescuers took 30 minutes to cut free the bodies of driver Suthipong Meesiri and passenger Suthida Eamsamang.

The people in the SuperCheap truck - driver Nopparit Sakpirom and passenger Pakapan Chootong - were taken to Thalang Hospital with minor injuries.

An impact that kills two people instantly indicates at least one of the vehicles was travelling at speed.

''The Mitsubishi pickup was heading south in the north-bound one-way lane,'' said Lieutenant Kongpan. ''It is always a dangerous and illegal thing to do.''

Many of Phuket's motorcycle riders go against the traffic when it suits, often endangering their lives and the lives of others. When motorcycle riders graduate to larger vehicles, they often maintain the same habits as learned on motorcycles.

Local traffic in Thailand often breaks the rules for the sake of time and convenience. SuperCheap trucks frequently feature in crashes, more often than any other brand on Phuket.

the fookers drive on the wrong side with impunity on divided road when it suits them, although to fair they usually put hazard lights on.
