Having had dengue fever a few years back with the doc warning me to not get it again, we bought a fan powered mosquito trap for the rental house. It looks like a happy frog with a UV light in its mouth and a fan that sucks the skeeters down to a meshed area in the bottom. It does catch a lot of them, but I had to put a switch on the light as it is too bright when you want to sleep. It also has a one way air valve that never really closes, so if you have trapped a few that are still alive and turn the unit off, they are free to find their way out.
Although it works well as long as you leave it running, I regret buying it after seeing some of the high voltage zapper ones in action that you see for sale now at Makro. Those things make a rather satisfying "smack" every time a mosquito goes to blood sucking heaven. Would be interesting to know how much voltage and capacitive storage they use, but if you are looking for a skeeter eater, high voltage is much more satisfying than a simple sucker. Might still buy one and make a pitcher of margaritas for an evening of mosquito corona watching.
