    This is a Snake.

Years ago I posted this Pic of my King Cobra experience on Koh Phan-Gan.

I was riding my bike back over the mountain to Tong Nai-Pan bay when at the very top of the mountain I nearly run over this nasty little bastard.

This was 1988, Check out the D9 tracks that can be seen on the road and near the stick. 5 metres long I recon.

I've just rescanned it so I'll bang it up again so the Newbs can enjoy the wonders of Thailand. Beware the King Cobra.

Yep, I used to rent a bike out from Tong Nai-Pan.

I'd ride the mountain everyday on a new 125 Honda MX.

Awesome ride in the Mud and assorted shite dodging holes and the mountain side.

Only ever seen one King Cobra in Thailand, he slid across the path and into the bushes right beside the main entry at the Movenpick in Phuket!. It's odd to have only ever seen one, played a lot of golf around Thailand (it would be 1000+ rounds) and while seeing a small snake of some description isn't uncommon, there's never been a King Cobra spotted in what must be a snakes idea of paradise

King cobras are different from other cobras in that they sometimes hang on after biting. Other snakes bite either once, or a few times, but don't hang on.
King cobras are also a lot more poisonous and have enough venom to kill 30 to 40 people.

My uncle-in-law had one bite him on the thumb. He immediately chopped off the top half. He knew you don't screw around with those buggers.

    Good idea that.
Chop off its head so it can't bite again.

Saw a King at Thai Muang Golf Course on the 17th t-box. He was curled up next to the T-box sleeping. My partner and I tee'd off and he never moved. Big bastard. Too bad about Thai Muang closing down. Was a great course and the price was really reasonable. Kings are magnificent creatures, seen a few here.

    The Kings are impressive, indeed.

Yet the Siamese Cobra is larger and deadlier.

My mother-in-law was out gathering herbs and such in the forest in Phetchabun and says a king cobra reared up in front of her and looked her in the eye from only a meter or so away. He just looked at her a moment, she stayed still and he moved on. People up there don't seem to worry about the king cobras much, it's the spitting cobras and Russell's vipers, plus the kraits at night time, that worry them the most.

I knew Bill Haast in Coral Gables back in the day, and he would admit that the kings he used in his snake shows would get so tame that he could hardly get them to rise up and pretend to be cross with him. He really hated handling reticulated pythons because they tended to be both quick to bite (and could really lay a nasty bite on you) and irascible. Funny coming from a man who survived a krait bite.

By the way, that doesn't look close to five meters.

Meaner (more nervous) maybe, but neither larger nor deadlier.

^If that is so, why not add another half a meter? You would have a world record.

Saw a three meter king cobra crossing the road on the outskirts of Bangkok, and I ran over a five meter python with my truck near the same location. It was night and I was overtaking a turning truck in the outside lane. Didn't see it till I went over it. It felt like hitting a speed bump at speed and I saw it writhe up taller than the truck in my rear view mirror. Did not stop to see if it was ok.

Five meter python- it's either dead or it can mess you up pretty bad.

I heard of a guy hitting a panther in Florida and putting it in the backseat unconscious. It awoke en route.

I have another photo somewhere of this snake standing tall trying to climb the embankment behind it.

It could not so turned and headed back down the Mountain. I'll post it when I find it.
