Wtf is a 'ฉะมด'? Cos my family is eating one

The closest English word for this animal would be 'chamot', and I can't find a translation of the Thai spelling.

Basically, it looks like a small black dog with a long tail. It is not a dog, (my ex comes from Nakon Sakon, so I've seen the type of dogs that they eat up there)

This poor critter came from the hills near Chumpon. It is probably some rare species that is being decimated by other primative species, such as my ex and her family.

I was going to take a full photo of the beast, but they have already eaten half of it! So here is the rest:

This is definitely not a dog (very long primate tail), short front legs, can't remember the back legs cos they are in the cooking pot right now.

Any Thai scholars recognise the Thai word (spelt out for me by my family)?
Any students of rare primate species recognise this animal?
Any chefs know a good recipe or two for this wee beastie?

It looks like your Thai spelling is wrong. ชะมด = Civet

Derive from the extended Viverridae family.
Almost belongs within the Civet group - but not.

It appears more canine/fox-like than what a true Chamot [feline family] is.

Thaimeme got it. Does it have an English name 'ultra-rare black doggy thing' or 'tasty but ugly critter' that I can check on Wiki?

I want to know if I can dob my family in to the authorities and claim a reward for eating an endangered species

Update - Wiki tells me that this is a 'linsang', and it is an endangered species due to dysfunctional, Thai dumbfcuks eating the poor critter out of existence.

    Banded linsang?

It is the rarest of the civets, and is sometimes called the tiger-civet.

Banded linsang - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Closer guess.
Better resemblance to Simon's roaster special.

^^ Well, Jeff, the picture you posted up in reply number 3 is of a civet. According to the website you hot-linked it from (wattanakaffee.net--กาแฟขี้ชะมด), it's a small Indian civet - ชะมดเช็ด - and is the kind of civet that you get civet poop coffee from.

So humans aren't the only animals into bestiality then?

    Sounds strangely reminiscent of the animal in this thread (albeit without the hair);
