Irish teen pleads for justice over alleged Phuket corruption, death threats, kidnapping

Jessie Vard has asked people to share her YouTube video to help shed light on the situation that she and her family have been forced to live through. Photo: Facebook
PHUKET: A video posted on the Facebook page “Justice for Jessie” has gone viral as 15-year-old Irish girl Jessie Vard pleads for justice for her family, who have allegedly suffered from years of police corruption, death threats, property fraud and kidnapping.

Jessie posted the video denouncing the Thai police and justice system ahead of her 61-year-old father, Colin Vard, appearing in front of press in Bangkok on February 12, asking for justice in a more than 64-million-baht property fraud case dating back to 2009.

“Thai people should know about Phuket [and] what happens there. [There is] so much corruption. Nobody can control the corruption. I think nobody wants to control the corruption,” Jessie says in Thai. “We lost our home and my father [lost] his business due to corruption. Now, we have no money and nowhere to live. [We are] scared to go out. We have spent five years running from evil.”

Jessie goes on to say that corruption has infiltrated many institutions and people in Thailand, including the police, lawyers, land officers and banks, echoing her father’s statement on the 12th.

“They all work together, the poor and innocent must lose,” she said. “My father nearly lost his life too. Many times people tried to kill him because he fights the corruption.”

Jessie alleges the Mr Vard recently came to Phuket to follow up on a tip-off that he received about a police report he filed having been changed, and evidence he provided having been removed. However, she says that he was threatened and chased off the island.

“I ask, is there any law or justice in Thailand? I carry this pain all my life. All our human rights have been taken from us,” Jessie says.

She then goes on to recount an incident about five years ago when men arrived at their home in Phuket and threatened to kill Mr Vard, and attempted to kidnap her and her brother. She claims that the local police failed to take appropriate action.

“My dad has spent five years trying to make [a] police report. Does my father have to die for us to get justice?” she asks.

“I ask all good and honest people to share my video and let the world see the good in Thai people, not just the bad. We need your support and help. Please share my page. Thank you.”

Journalist Andrew Drummond, who recently left Thailand for fear of his and his family’s safety, documented Mr Vard’s case in 2011.

“Two children of an Irish businessman [Mr Vard] were thrown into a well while his housekeeper, working with ‘organised criminals’, set about to defraud him of his mansion and six other houses on the Thai island of Phuket, it was claimed today,” Mr Drummond reported on May 1, 2011 (story here).

“We have been advised by the police to move location every three days. I have been told to change my phones and SIM cards and not to contact anyone who could be remotely connected with this,” Mr Vard told Mr Drummond. “I am virtually penniless. But what I cannot ever come to terms with is what happened to my children. They have nightmares every night and wake up screaming. They are reliving what happened to them in the well.”

At the press conference on February 12, Mr Vard handed Lt Gen Prawut Thavonsiri, a national police spokesman, the documents backing his case of the alleged fraud.

Gen Prawut promised to investigate the more than five-year-old case as soon as possible, the Thai news portal 'Manager Online'* reported.

Jessie’s video, posted on February 3, has almost 50,000 views, as it suddenly started going viral yesterday.

    Jesus,

    One must ask the question.

Why on Earth would a supposedly intelligent man sink his life savings into Thailand and not have enough in reserve to leave the country and start again ?

The vast majority of business people know the inherent risks of doing business in Thailand.

Capt Borworn of the Navy’s Third Area Command in Phuket called for Mr Vard to file a complaint through the Damrongtham Center.

PHUKET: The leading representative in Phuket for the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has called on Colin Vard to file a formal complaint so that the Royal Thai Navy can launch an investigation into allegations of inaction by police into death threats, kidnapping and property fraud.

The call follows Mr Vard’s 15-year-old daughter Jessie posting a video on her “Justice for Jessie” Facebook page on February 3, in which she pleads for justice for her family, who have allegedly suffered from years of police corruption, death threats, property fraud and kidnapping (story here).

The video has since gone viral. As of Wednesday afternoon, the video had attracted 98,286 views, 3,114 likes, 350 comments and 2,867 shares.

The “Jessie for Justice” page had drawn more than 350,000 visitors in the preceding 24 hours.

The video as of today has garnered 130,000 views and 3,600 shares.

Jessie posted the video ahead of her father appearing in front of the press in Bangkok on February 12, asking for justice in a more than 64-million-baht property fraud case dating back to 2009.

At the press conference, Mr Vard handed national police spokesman Prawut Thavonsiri documents supporting his case of the alleged fraud.

Lt Gen Prawut promised to investigate the more than five-year-old case as soon as possible, the Thai news portal Manager Online reported.

Regardless, Capt Borworn Promkaewngam of the Navy’s Third Area Command in Phuket has called for Mr Vard to file a complaint through the Damrongtham Center (ombudsman’s office) at Phuket Provincial Hall.

“I was not aware of the case,” Capt Borworn, who heads the Internal Security Operations Command in Phuket, told the Phuket Gazette.

“However, I suggest that he file a complaint through the Damrongtham Center. They will pass it on to me and the governor [Nisit Jansomwong]. We will take it from there.”

Maj Gen Krajang Suwannarat, the Region 8 Police deputy commander in charge of Phuket, told the Gazette that he also was unaware of the Vard case, and that he was powerless to take any action without a complaint or an order from his superiors to investigate the claims.

“I have yet to receive any orders regarding this, but if I do, of course we will investigate,” he said.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Patchara Boonyasit, although aware of the case, also said his hands were tied.

“I am aware of Mr Vard filing his complaint to Gen Prawut, but at this stage I have not received any orders to investigate,” he told the Gazette.

“At the moment, there is nothing we can do, but as soon as we receive official orders from our commanding officers, we will investigate the complaint.”

Oh, fah chrissakes Terry. Vard was not a businessman as such. He was technically a millionaire and a successful writer who invested money in a succession of properties in Phuket but these were stolen from him through a conspiracy of Thai police in cahoots with bent Land Office officials and bent lawyers.

Police from another district have tried to investigate but have been prevented from doing so by bent Phuket police.

It's a crime. But in your dinky little Thailand which you continually remind us is the same as anywhere else there is no fucking justice for anyone.

They are all bent. Bangkok police, politicians, civil servants, you fucking name it, they're all fucking bent. And the reason for that is that they are all Thai which means that they are all either bent or too craven, or too stupid or too gutless to do anything about it.

Just saying like,in case you still don't get the point.

It's a bent society. Totally and utterly corrupted with no prospect whatsoever of changing because they're all bent. As in crooked. As in skewed. As in a 9 bob note.

Andrew Drummond exposed the attempted murder and theft several years ago and was instrumental in finding a Thai police colonel off the island to protect Vard and his family. Abhisit instructed the police to investigate but nothing happened. And do you know why, Terry?

Because the Thai are bent and the biggest hypocrites on the planet. Say one thing but do another. They can't help themselves because they're all so fucking bent.

Too crooked to lie straight in bed.

I was having a beer with an old mate in Phuket over the weekend. He was regaling a story of a Thai friend of his landlords who had a fake police uniform made at one of the Indian tailors and then proceeded to fleece farang for 'no helmet' money at a certain island location.

    Eventually the police caught him.

He now continues to do it with the addition of a weekly trip to the cop shop to drop off a cake tin.

    Fucking fabulous place eh?

No surprises that the Thai authorities all claim to be unaware of this incident involving Mr Vard and his properties, whilst everyone else on Phuket knows all about this problem when it was first publicised many years ago.

This is the guy whose kids were imprisoned down a well.... the authorities did .. er ... nothing

Well, if that is your understanding of the situation then I must revise my opinion of you and conclude you are either Ŵelsh or an idiot, or, and this is now quite likely, both.

Vard and his family were the victims of appalling crimes committed by a conspiracy of thieves which has enjoyed full immunity from prosecution. Even in this shitty country there are some cops who were aghast at the sheer scale of what they did.

That there are still authorities on that turd of an island who claim to have had no knowledge of what occurred is just more evidence of how immoral and evil the place is.

Thai people Please LIKE SHARE AND SHAME

This is what happened to us yesterday in a major Thai bank in central Bangkok. I was shocked. I am young and cannot believe this is how a major bank and public company operates. A bank that represents the Thai people across the world. When my dad tried to talk to the senior executive he was so rude. He ignored what my dad had to say and ordered the 10+ police to first intimidate us, then arrest us and then take us to prison.

A bank that is happy to imprison two children? What would their customers and shareholders think? He also tried to make my dad angry by laughing at him when he said that we were homeless for 5 years and now had no money.
Jonathan Head of BBC television was with us yesterday so the shame of it all is on video for the world to see very soon.
We ask everybody to LIKE SHARE AND SHAME. We want to get 1 million people if we can to say No to Corruption and expose these bullies. This is not the Thai way.

The bank told dad that because the manager involved in the corruption against us had retired there was nothing the bank could do which of course is not true. So instead of being investigated and locked up in prison for 7 years my dad said the manager is on a nice bank pension with almost 15 Million Baht of our money while we are homeless and Bahtless.
The Phuket criminal court ruled fraud but amazingly the civil court decided to ignore this ruling and order that my dad repay the bank managers fraudulent 15 million Baht loan to get our house back. Ordering my dad to pay back a loan that somebody else took out to buy back our own house?

When we and the BBC tried to talk with the Bank's senior legal advisor he tried to fool my dad by telling him to go to Lumpini police station to file a criminal report. Of course every police report must be filed in the police station where the crime is committed.
My dad pointed this out to him adding that the banks senior legal officer should be aware of this fact. Dad then showed the senior Bank official evidence of fraud and asked him to comment. Indeed fraud so serious that it could affect the banks standing internationally. The angry bank official responded by calling the police and ordering them to remove Dad, Daire and myself from the bank. He actually ordered 3 armed policemen stand over us in a threatening manner.
The police officers were embarrassed and sympathetic. Indeed one said that he understood our problem and that we were absolutely correct that once the criminal court had ruled fraud the civil court must follow. But not it seems in Phuket. The police officers said that they did not want to arrest us. They were very nice

I was shocked and terrified by the way the bank treated us. Especially the senior legal advisor who was very rude and threatening.
The first photo sees him disrespecting my father and the last ordering the police to arrest and take us to jail.

I don't know Thegent, I find this saga quite pathetic actually whatever way you try to spin it.

So you have told us the victim is a " Writer ". Whatever he was he was a filthy rich farang who invested all his money in Thailand and lost the lot.

I gather he had bought a heap of houses, considering Farang cannot own land here is seems a stupid thing to do. Maybe one could be considered a fair punt but to buy many seems a tad silly.

I know that there are other supposedly legal ways a farang can own land, through forming businesses and such bit being Thailand its always dodgy Huh.

Maybe he should of just Invested in top end Condo's, this way is legal for the Farang.

I tend to be of the opinion that this guy was a fukin idiot for not having money outside of Thailand to fall back on.

For him to let himself be in the position to lose everything he had is simply stupidity on his part. Greed has let him down..

Oh well, tough shit EH. Buyer beware.

Even dumb farang know buying houses in Thailand is a 50 50 bet.

Terry, would you be so sanguine if you had placed 20,000 AUD into your Thai bank account only to have it stolen the next week by the bank manager and when you complained to the authorities they did nothing despite feeble assurances to the contrary?

Take it on the chin, would you, and accept the comment " tough shit, innit" ?

And when you persisted with the complaint and started a legal action to recover YOUR money you would accept death threats to be entirely well deserved?

And at the end of another weary day you would simply review what you did and accept that it was same as placing a wager on the spin of a roulette wheel?

    You fucking idiot.

Wait until terrys pension fund gets depleted and drained by the banker and union crooks who manage it and then we can watch as terrys chicken come home to roost.

terry, your posts on thailand are becoming stranger by the day, how you can blame this man for the misfortunes that have befallen him is beyond me.

I think you must be unwell.
