Chuffin' Hell! I actually got 2 driving tickets back to back

Was only the other week the wife and I were talking about the current state of driving and driver attitude in Thailand, then two days ago bang comes two tickets.

One a speeding fine somewhere on a stretch from Hua Hin during NY, and the other a section at Phetkasem near the BTS construction as you turn left to Rama 5. I made an Illegal entry into the right hand lane, or my wife did as we can't remember who was driving. 500bht fine for each. Both tickets accompanied with photo evidence.

About time I think.

Any else had one recently?

If anyone wants the point of the camera I'll stick the photo on where I was caught.

I have heard about many photo tickets down south. A very lazy way to extort money IMO.

I hear they are coming to the north soon and KK already has some, so beware.

Got one years ago in Nakon Suan speeding. They mailed the photo ticket to me in Phuket...500 baht seems to be standard. Hope they don't go western and start charging by the MPH over the posted speed limit.

Maybe, as long as they enforce all the laws broken. They should be able to pay for all the cameras from just one placed in a good spot.

Where does the fine money go, I wonder?

How is it possibly "A very lazy way to extort money"??

It's very sensible - the OP was breaking the law and was caught on camera, then received a Ticket in the Mail and had to pay the correct fine for the offence.

This system gives you absolutely NO CHANCE of paying off (bribing) a Policeman for a lesser sum and the full amount of the Fine goes to the Thai Government.

I hope this expands throughout Thailand.

Both front. Funny you mentioned because the right hand entry I made I've done a few times on the bike when there is no traffic and never received a ticket.

They need to sort other offenses out first. Having the correct coloured lights on ones vehicle. A number plate on the rear(usually removed for avoiding speed fines). Tilting number plates (for the same reason). Driving on the correct side of the road and so on and so on. I don't believe speeding drivers to be that big a problem up north. More likely drivers using the overtaking lane continually to be the biggest offense, followed by driving into oncoming traffic.

^Tiz in Bangkok, and if they start issuing fines on a regular basis to those that can barely afford their finance payments they might think twice. I agree there are many issues from the infrastructure to bad and poorly trained drivers.

Got one from Nakhon Sawan around 3 years that was posted to my address in Bangkok.

The picture itself was just the back of the motor and looked like it was printed off a cheap HP inkjet on a A4 piece of crap paper.

Sure it was an policeman hiding in the bushes with a camera shooting anyone in the fast lane.

Most of those cameras along the major highways were removed or deactivated due to the number of people who had their own cameras going at the traffic stop. to many cops shown forcing the payments from Thai drivers over bogus offenses. Haven't seen any new resurrection of the same old corruption tactic (speed traps) in quite a while.

Hua Hin had one that was signaged to let you know in advance that they had set up a speed zone. Slow down to 80-100kph and you should get through easily.

Traffic violations are rampant as jackrabbits mating in spring time. I personally like the traffic enforcement as it is...seen, but seldom heard from.

Patrick my point was that before these cameras were available, the BIB would just set up a desk by the side of the road and stopped cars that they felt were going too fast, staying in the fast lane too long or any other infraction they could think up. Has anyone ever seen a radar gun that verifies the speed of vehicles pulled over, I sure haven't. Only the BIB word that you had broken a rule of the road is enought to collect some tea money. To me this is being lazy. How many police patrol cars do you see pulling over vehicles for infractions? I have never seen any in 10 years. Just the arbitrary orange cones placed at various spots to check vehicles and hand out fines.

Putting up cameras is even lazier since the BIB do not even have to be present. If you believe all the fines go to the Thai government you may be right when you consider that the BIB work for the government. A better question is how the money is spent to benefit the Thai public? Has anyone ever seen any documents that shows how this money is received and then spent?

I would think The BIB are upset that cameras are now interfering with the bribes and tea money, as has already been stated. I will add that enforcing all the laws of the road would be nice, but will never happen. Again, this is due to the laziness of the BIB and unfortunate for the Thai people and others who die in so many traffic accidents each year. To protect and Serve does not seem to be the mantra in Thailand.
