Having spent time in the North East I can tell those who have not experienced it, that life is same same but different.
The villages and the scenery are completely the opposite. Betty's vista of a rice field is the antithesis of the southern plantations. Unless you get to high ground here, the mountain views are lost amid row after row of plantation trees restricting the big picture.
The worldly wise Isaan girl who introduced me to her home and family was no different to the plantation girl I live with now, but the surroundings and lifestyle were subtly different.
In Isaan her papa spoke no English but was keen to know if I married his daughter, would I buy her a BMW. I asked her to tell him If we did marry, I would buy us matching bicycles. He, being quite drunk halfway through the afternoon, howled with laughter and fell off the sala.
In Surat farm country there are no views, just miles and miles of tree line. I was introduced to her half sister and piles of barefoot kids, in a house with no running water. Everyone eats sat cross legged on the floor. Same same up north. Mostly folk sleep on the floor with a slim mattress. Same same.
North or south they live, subsist or die on the land, just the views are different.
There are some very dumb but contented people here. There are also some smart but contented people here.
    That's the real tragedy.

    You have to wonder...
Many instances that they seem to go through the motions of being attached.

There will always be the handful of anti-Buddhists shunned by the community at large.....yet not completely distanced from.

^^When the mother in law visits us in Bangkok from down south even though we have spare bedrooms.
She sleeps on the floor in the out door upstairs utility room has a long front area with no glass just iron grill work.
Still its nice and cool and she sleeps well there.
Fascists dress in black and go around telling people what to do, whereas priests... more drink!

And in all, there lies the majority of females that can outwit a superior, educated Westerner, with just their tongue. So to speak.

Educate them and give them the communication skills and confidence. Imagine how the country could improve?

Quite like the vistas of palm oil & tall coconut palms in the South myself. One gets weary of never-ending flat rice fields.

Isaan is not all flat and boring by any means. The photo posted by Bettyboo a bit back looks very much like where we live. Lots of wooded areas and forested hills.

This photo was taken right behind our house. Has some similarity to Betty's stock picture of typical Isaan landscape.

This photo is looking in the opposite direction. Hills on both sides.

I wrote a short essay about a violent incident that took place in the local village a few years ago. It seems to fit in with the theme of this thread, so I'll try to find it and post. It's quite interesting----I think.
