Is there any such thing as a decent external speaker system that can be used to listen to music from these phone/pad things?

Some terrible advice thusfar from some of the usual suspects...

You didn't tell us what size you wanted, and this is important. There is, however, one family which will suit all your size requirements...

If you want it for GPS then before you do anything else go and sit in your car and picture where and how you might mount it.
My iphone in its rubber case for instance sits perfectly stable in a molding between the tacho and speedo without any need for a clamp.

The garmin app for thailand is cheap and works perfectly, almost as good as a dedicatd gps.

Yes, also tells you which lane to be in for upcoming junctions etc.
Both Thai and Engrish spoken and written as options.

All government buildings are listed as well as shops malls, parks etc, but the best bit for thailand is it lists all Wats.
If you are going somewhere you are unfamiliar with, just as the name of the local wat and choose it from the menu, much better than trrying to figure out the correct english address.

yes, it is on your NOT NEEDS list..
Fortunately for you it is not something you can opt out of, don't think there is any phablet without Bluetooth nowadays.

The phone with the best speakers is this one:

HTC One, HTC One M8 - actually, it has a shout at being the best phone out there.

I use one of these (via Bluetooth - it's just another wireless protocol, very easy; just tap the phone on the speaker and it starts... ):

They are very good, but pricey, you can buy better for cheaper nowadays. It's very portable though - use it as an amp for my guitar too (along with my mini amphead that plugs directly into the geetar).

    This is top quality:

This is good, and it is cheap(ish):

This is pretty good and priced right for a Northern bastard (or budding terrorist)...

Can be used to blow up iTart devices:

Don't listen to these bolok talkers, Stoker. Google Maps comes free with all Android devices and works perfectly well (with zero effort at all on your part other than pushing the start button) in Thailand. Easy to get an adaptor kit that plugs into your lighter pod in the car then a holder that sucks onto your window - cheap and cheerful and work...

The map apps use a lot of battery power, so be sure to have your phoned plugged in!

    It's all surprisingly easy...

You'll need one of these for in car maps use otherwise you will find your battery running out in about 2-3 hours (they use a microUSB that fits virtually every phone - not iApple...):

    Hmmm...

So many good cheap phones out there, Stoker; basically, they will all do the job you require. Android has built in maps. I'm not sure how good the Windows maps app is as I've never used it, but if it's the one that Nokia developed (which I'm pretty sure it is) then it's good and works well without being connected to the internet too.

If you're using it for maps in the car and your eyes ain't perfect then a 5" screen or larger is perfect. I have an LG G3 which is about 10,000 baht in Thailand now - does all of the stuff you want perfectly (I use it for all of the stuff you said), and the screen is really nice to see.

LG G3 review | Mobile Phones Review | TechRadar

    Just don't drop it!

On the rugged side, the Sony Xperia phones are all excellent. I have dropped my xperia z many times, the wife still uses it, and it's as new. You can pick up an xperia z or z1 for around or under 10,000 in Thailand.

Samsung do a s4 active. It's not as good as the Sony or LG phones above (or the best Samsungs), but it will do everything you want and shouldn't break when you drop it:

    http://www.soyacincau.com/wp-content...-s4-active.jpg

I'm not sure of the price, but should also be around the 10,000 baht mark, and it's a pretty good phone. All the phones at 10,000 baht up are bloody good nowadays.

BTW, the iTart devices are very likely to break if you drop them (the LG screen will break if you drop it too...). They have small screens (apart form the latest ones which are very expensive), and will enjoy taking your credit card details for EVERYTHING!!!

I'm sure a couple of our members had a Samsung Galaxy4 active. Maybe one will come on and tell you their experience with it.

You have and you have kept me awake with all your drunken snoring and farting.

Get Betty to stand next to you while making your selection. If she gets a hard on, run away.
