What was the first CD that you bought?

For me, it was Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms. When CDs started to be available, I popped down to the local record shop to peruse their selection of precisely 3 CDs.

I ended up buying all 3 (can't remember what the other 2 were..)

In those early days, CDs were mechanically-robust, able to withstand having jam spread on them etc.

I recall listening to Dire Straits every morning on my portable CD player as I jogged to work in Leatherhead, Surrey. I had a job at ERA Technology as a satellite ground station design/systems engineer. Those songs bring back some good - and not so good memories....

I remember my first 45 which was "I'm coming to take you away" as it came in an edition of Mad magazine and played something else if you ran it backwards.
My first cassette was Uriah Heap.
My literal first CD was ........Petshop boys.........
But only because I bought a cd walkman in Honkers and that was the only englsh cd the shop had...... Honest.

Amazing that the techo wizards still cannot get the same sound on disk as was found on a vinyl piece.

This was a rather weird exercise performed on 'Tomorrow's World' on Brit, tv - a weekly show about inventions and innovations.

They spread jam on a cd and then played it after washing it to emphasise that CDs were supposedly indestructible.

The reality proved somewhat different.

I think the first CD I bought was a 'greatest hits' by Paul Simon. Never that bothered by his earlier stuff but thought it was OK. I liked his 'Graceland' period.

Same here!. Got it home and listened to it end-2-end marveling at the clarity and the lack of "hiss and pops" my vinyl collection had. Then my elder brother got home from work and assured me that CD's were indestructible and to prove this, he put it on the floor and did a pirouette on it. It goes without saying it was instantly fucked and the first CD he ever bought was also Brothers in Arms

Basically you have never recovered from this spot of teenage angst and wanting to be different. Most people grow out of it by about age 16 or so.

First CD was a non-event but my first 8 track, that was a big deal because it coincided with the purchase of my first car, a VW super beetle. The 8 track was a Santana Abraxas. Installed the 8 track player and speakers myself.

I understand what you're saying and agree to some extent. Carry that to the next level and you have today's digital downloads where you don't even have the CD to hang on to.

Still, there's something to be said about convenience and ease of storage.


Regarding the OP, I come from the vinyl age and which one I bought first is lost to antiquity.

CD's where alien to me as an avid record collector, i viewed them as inferior.

They are now a necessary evil as they keep the children entertained in the car and keep them away from the expensive vinyl.

I could care less what the first cd I bought was. The first album I owned was a full Star Wars movie track, it was a double album and was the audio of the entire movie. Not a sound track.

The second album I owned was was KISS double platinum and the third was AC/DC Powerage. I was gifted those three albums, but I can recall who gave them to me.

The first album I bought with my own money was AC/DC Back in black.

First album bought I think was Deep Purples 'FireBall.' or Floyds 'Dark side of the Moon'. Not sure.

Don't know about first CD because I used to rent them from the town library, then later started to buy the odd few here and there. As already mentioned CDs didn't have the same collector appeal and music in the 70's had a live studio recording feel to it that I liked.
