A battle cry for revolution captures the imagination but it fails to take account of the true value and wisdom that gets accumulated in political and legal systems that evolve organically and democratically over centuries.
The supposed enemy of these nutters is the 'corporation'. Corporations in capitalist economies generate wealth and products and services and employment that the bedroom revolutionaries take for granted and wouldn't be able to function without.
Revolution is for teenagers.
Tell that to Cuba,USA,Egypt,Spain and Russia.

Most 'ordinary people' have heard his ideas dished up a hundred ways already and have mostly rejected them because they they are in the grip of fears created by the media and politicians. I like Russell Brand but he will never lead people to some kind of egalatarian utopia. Maybe brits will respond positively to his message because he is one of their own but Americans will reject him as some kind of foreign kook.
Mr Brand has quite a following from a younger generation. That is the key - a younger generation.
He's articulate , bright , engaging and probably doesn't use hard drugs anymore.
He's got a syndicated show, an itinerary of comedy gigs and televised events touting his book(s) and a load of money in his savings account.
He raises the same questions that have been raised for more than fifty years but in reality - doesn't present specific remedies to civilizations ills.
Personally speaking, George Carlin's "American Dream" was way ahead of his time
on who really controls the political agenda...Lenny Bruce prior.
At that time they didn't possess a modicum of media channels to disseminate their messages that are today's prevalent avenues of information / media distribution.
Mr Brand is just 're-hashing' visions of the past using today's examples (IMO).
That's the complete opposite of the truth. He's the aborted poster-child of the brain-dead junior left.
Russell Brand?s Marxist Facepalm - Guy Fawkes' blogPresumably that means Brand will be giving up his:
$15 million net worth (according to the Rich List)
$2.2 million mansion in the Hollywood Hills that once belonged to Laurence Olivier, complete with its own cinema, five bedrooms and five bathrooms
$10 million that according to Simon Cowell he pockets for each film he appears in
Directorships of several companies which allegedly use tax efficient financial arrangements
Extension of his £1.8 million book deal
Earnings from doing adverts for major multi-national corporations.
Use of the Savoy’s butlers to do his shopping
Perhaps he could donate it all to foodbanks instead? Hypocrites of the world, unite…
Real revolutions happen when there is a sudden drop in both economic and political realities versus expectations. The real revolution happening in the UK with the SNP and UKIP; and this is mirrored across Europe. Of course, the lefties like to own the concept of revolution, just as they like to own the concept of "fairness", and so they deny that anything resembling a radical revolt on what they call the right is described as everything but, and everything bad: everything from evil, hate, lies, to mental illness.
Brand is inarticulate, dim, and un-engaging. He probably never used hard drugs - it's all part of the "edgy" marketing of his brand to appeal to a desperate young audience.
Brand by name and brand by nature, he's using people via cultural memes to sell his brand and his products and look after his self - like a true socialist...
Are you saying I don't like him? A weird claim to make!!
That's my impression. Your impression might be different but I doubt you have any more real idea of how 'sorted' Mr Brand's ideas are in his head than I do.
That's how he sounds to me. He might sound different to you but for you to claim that he sounds different to ME is another strange claim for you to make.
That's my tongue-in-cheek wish. I know it will never happen. It wasn't a prediction and I didn't claim it as fact or truth.
Not arguing with your thesis but a 5 bed / bath mansion in Hollywood for just 2.2million seems a snip.As Somtam will confirm this would get you a modest home in nice bits of London these days

i think someone need to do a "revolution" on Brands head, the verbal bolox that omits from this fools mouth leaves much to be desired, (waste 15 minutes of your time at your peril,)
having had the most unfortunate experience of crossing paths with this fool as a child growing up in Essex one can only wonder where the youth of today is really going when they follow this guy's line of crap, he certainly does not dupe me.

But Brand lost his temper during a housing protest in Downing Street when TV reporter Paraic O'Brien asked him whether the super-rich buying up property in London was driving up prices for everyone else.
The incensed star said he is 'part of the solution' and called the reporter a 'snide' for asking how much he pays in rent.
^ As I was saying, I think it was a fair question by the reporter, and a question Brand should have been ready for and easily able to respond to. He must have got up on the wrong side of the bed.
It was a fair question.
But of course it suits the establishment to insist that anyone who is on the side of the poor and powerless is a hypocrite if they are doing well and have a voice.
Brand's point, as I'm sure you're aware, is that the whole system is not working. If we effectively insist that those who are doing well out of the system and have a voice must approve of it then so the system is perpetuated.
Here’s a property similar to the one Russell Brand apparently lives in. A 3 bedroom warehouse conversion in East London for a rent of GBP 5,200 a month.
From the outside, it doesn't look any nicer than the block of flats the poorer people are living in (in blue's post). It's probably bigger inside, though.

I'd like to point out that Brand being wealthy does not mean he shouldn't stick up for the poor. It actually brings him all the more kudos, IMHO.

In a nutshell, he is an anarchist anti-capitalist socialist unionist. There is nothing original about it.
Whilst his intent is wholesome, what he forgets is that it is people who work hard and invest their money who own the majority of corporations via pension funds etc and benefit from their profits. Anyone can do that, but he seems to prefer to support those who want a free ride.
you mean his landlord ? -Originally Posted by runner

He is a hypocrite in the sense he doesn't want a block of flats being sold to a foreign owned business to then let out to richer people , but he happy to rent a similarly owned place himself .
Probably, but you've got homegrown versions (often less kooky) pointing out the growing problem with wealth inequality too. People like Robert Reich, Paul Krugman and good ole' Uncle Noam. It is a real issue, not being addressed, and it threatens both the fabric and stability of our society, and the neoliberal economy itself. Why are so many Americans (in particular) so damn brainwashed by the media and politicians? More than even Brits, you have been and are being blatantly robbed by a small minority.Originally Posted by Humbert

Personally, I think it's well past time for the People to flex their collective muscle- and if it takes a few kooks like Russell Brand to awaken them from their collective torpor, then he's a hero in my books. They pulled the wool over Your eyes and redistributed the wealth away from You to benefit a tiny minority, now show some damn balls and get them to redistribute some back. It only takes a more equitable taxation policy- hardly Trotskyite stuff.
I don't agree. Brand lives in a converted warehouse. The building was brought into life as accommodation and is rented out expensively. I doubt the flats have ever been rented out cheaply, whereas the flats he was protesting about are at the lower end of the economic scale (rented to low-income families) and have had tenants for many years. The problem is the increase of rents in those flats. It is expected that the new owners will increase the rents to the point that the tenants wouldn't be able to afford to live there anymore (from £600 a month for a two-bed flat to something closer to £2,400).
So the situations are very different.Westbrook plans to raise rents sky-high, forcing residents – most of whom have leases with a break clause of just two weeks – into homelessness.
a) Disused warehouse converted to expensive flats for wealthy people.
b) Owners of social housing increase rents so tenants are forced out.
