How did you build up your circle of friends in LOS?

As previously stated I may or may not be moving to Thailand in January to work, live, get it on with with girlfriend.

I definitely don't intend spending each and every day with her. Far from that. A good balance of foreign mateys and time with her seems the way (and a bit of down time, alone with a book/pc/work).

In China I made a few mates through my work at the uni, but skipped on the freaks (plenty of them), met a few at pubs, clubs etc.

Most were build up, over time, through mutual acquaintances.

Where I'm at (and leaving in a couple of months) we have the sailing/paddleboarding/kayaking/ beach volleyball club, where I've met plenty of people over time (and a sprinkling of fruitloops too).

I'd be living in Bangers, so no club as above I guess.

Where'd you meet you 'long-term' mates?

Naturally, need the great desire to keep company and kinship with brethren Farang and associated hang outs.

I cant find your Cha Am fred, but in there, there is evidence of you taking a newspaper to a bar and ignoring poor Stoker whilst doing the crossword

Mate, Most of the punters you will associate with will only ever be acquaintances especially if you have just moved here.

Takes a very long time to actually gather a real friend.

    Get used to that EH.

Its like the Pattaya flying club.

These Punters invest all their emotional well being in a bar girl and when that goes tits up they learn how to fly.

Some punters will never have real friends in Thailand or any other country they decide to move to.

    Easy as that really.

Hash House Harriers. Some not altogether desirable, aka as boring as sh1t, but most OK. Which group you go to depends on your free time. You'll need a thick skin and a healthy liver!

Then I used ride a m/bike on weekends but have been lazy for a long time.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

The amount of time some people spend on forums I very much doubt they have many if any friends.

I enjoyed a few meet ups organized through this forum .

Those days seem to be gone though.

there's a (classy) sailing club in Pattaya. loads go there for the weekend from Bangkok but I expect it costs a shitload.

Beach volleyball at Arsenal Prakanong, always someone on there when I go to play football (regularly).

skiing/wakeboarding is also easy in BKK with regular meetups. not sure about the other things you mention.

met loads of nice people playing football and at work but very few i want to socialize with outside of what we do. but that's probably more down to me..
I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
    But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic

Location, location, location. Travel is a pain in LOS. So, unless you live in a foreign enclave your available "pool" of possible friends is extremely limited.

If you need face-to-face English conversation you will have limited opportunities unless you live in one of the foreign enclaves. (of course there are many forums available - not face-to-face or real time)

As far as picking and choosing friends - it doesn't really matter where you are, Choose Carefully. Plenty of bad eggs out there. Very difficult to find acquaintances and build friendships. hard to find enough common interests for the foundation of a friendship although, being in the "same boat" - ex-pat in Thailand does provide a common bond. Of course - your personal standards matter a great deal in both directions.

Good luck - select your home very carefully.

As it's really not a social or familiar forum any longer or any connective senses of the sort.

    Those were the days.

    Irrelevant really,

Just the other day I met a long term poster who contacted me out of the Blue.

These are the ones I enjoy the best. Actually get to talk to the person.

Unless you were a former wheel tapper or shunter, it's a long hard slog with many pitfalls.
Most folk don't resemble their online persona, so these fuckers will tell you anything.

My advice is to join a pool team or a travelling circus.
