Wife and I are avid readers: We read a lot in bed ,one handed and bent spines ( cannot be bonking all the time!)....wife takes out a dozen books from local library,many are falling apart.
'Deah! can you fix?' So used latex glue on one ..100% success..so repaired the rest...
Got a good few of my old favourites that are falling apart....need to apply the 'solution'

Although I usually read on kindle these days, the one thing you will always find in farang resorts and quite a few farang bars, is plenty of paperbacks.

Most are well worn and if they don't survive one reading it's game over. I'm a great believer in recycling old books. I often pass books on to friends who may find the book interesting or just a good read. In this way there is a constant supply of ever changing stock from various resources.
One of my favourite sports bars has an extensive library of books and DVDs with a policy of give one take one.
Tourist often leave newer books behind to make room or weight for duty free.
Given the used nature of the market the ocassional broken sine is no big problem.

Reminded me of the old joke:


The wife is curled up, ready to go to sleep, and the husband turns his bed lamp on to read a book.

Nope! Part of the pleasure of books is the smell and feel. Kindle just ain't the same. We also get a lot of really old books in and it's fascinating to think who's read and handled them over the last 200 years. Never going to get that with a Kindle.

Completely agree. I was saying this to the missus the other night as I picked up the latest paper back I had bought in a 2nd hand book shop. It was printed in the UK in the 80's, had shop stamps on it in Australia, HK, THailand, Boston US, and the final one in Thailand. The book had traveled the world and just last night the broken spine gave way with the first 100 pages dropping off in one lump. This latex solution? Would a couple of jonnies and some gaffer tape do the trip?

Actually - bloke i know here who runs the book shop I go to said that he only opened the place because his house was full of books and thought selling them might be fun.

^I like my books. I've been lugging many of them around the world for decades.

Plus, the Philippines is not a country of readers; I've rarely been in a Filipino home that had even one shelf of books. Maybe a Bible, and a few old schoolbooks, but that's about it.

Even my 3 and 4 year old granddaughters do their letters and numbers and kids' stories on a kiddie tablet.

Is that because all Philippines primary schools issue free kindle fire to their students. (THought not)

My ex used to go bonkers at me about the book collection. I believe it's a great resource especially for kids if you have fairly eclectic tastes and a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Don't even get me started on the National Geographic binders.

^I fully agree. I remember the brawls (4 kids) when the New National Geographic would arrive - same for Life, Time and the Saturday Evening post.

My twins do wander in now and again with "Dad, do you have a book on .......?"

I generally do.

But Google is easier for them, and they can print the stuff out rather than lugging my books to school.

My books and I are obsolete. To a degree.

I love books and reading. I have quite a few banana boxes full of books. I keep meaning to give them away, but find that i can't.

Kindle. I don't know. As NR says, its the whole book thing of a real book that is special.

If i was off on a long holiday i would consider a kindle. But would probably end up getting cast off books at the hotel to read. I have dumped around 50 books over the years in Africa, Thailand etc. I just hope others enjoyed them, as i have theirs.

There's nothing better than lying on a beach with a good book and all your cares and worries are back there!!
