Anybody heard from him?...
Yes, heard from him just the other day. He is fine, and can be found on a different forum.
Glad to hear he is well. Is he still afloat?
Apparently he ran aground on another forum...Can someone ask him to report here immediately, since he said he would be keeping us informed?...
Oh no, not another great poster that decided to leave us!
his blog site has not been updated for a few weeks...last comment was that his adventure was "a bust" and he was "coming to terms" with it...seemed pretty happy in Bamfield BC though..settling in for winter ...Looks like he may give it another go 2015
if so they are far from the first who have necessitated more than one attempt .
I'd been keeping an eye out for him at the Yacht club here in Fiji ... next year maybe it seems
Bit of a sad ending to a promising start. Engine problems, wind vane problems, sickness and all kinds of hassles. After sitting in Bamfield all winter the boat will need to be sorted out all over again. I hope they manage to finally get offshore after all this, but it gets harder and harder the longer the delay. A lot of the initial confidence is lost after so many setbacks...not to mention the financial challenges involved.
I've seen an awful lot of dreamers who tried, but never made it out of the Juan de Fuca straight. It's a bitch when the wind picks up against an ebb tide and the big freighters are bearing down on you day and night. It was not for lack of effort.
Darn it.
Well , I read on another thread, that his last post (or last online) was 18/9/14. He is obviously playing Possum.
Damn.
Hopefully the financial hit and the knock to his spirit haven't been too hard and he can give it another shot in the future.
SiT. Re-group. Adapt, improvise and overcome.
Did he go back out or did he finally pack it in? Anyone care to post a link to his blog site?
Well heck, shiite happens. Perhaps he's a bit reluctant to keep us availed because the glorious tour de force didn't quite turn out that way. Sick joke- looks like he indeed 'sailed into trouble', groan.
He shouldn't be coy. We'd love to hear his story, rain, hail or shine- we're not just fair weather sailors. I'm sure he knows those few who might gloat about it are the ones who could never dream of doing such a thing themselves.
I really give it up for the long distance blue water sailor.
There is no way on Earth would I ever go to sea except on a huge Cruise liner.
I could think of nothing worse than to be caught at sea in a massive dangerous storm in a small boat
Hope this guy is OK.
I used to love to do that in a surf kayak. Diffr'nt strokes and all that.Originally Posted by terry57

Yes OK,
But you weren't out in the Sunda Straights were you.
I've done it far from shore, in some isolated reef outcrops in the Timor sea, and the Barrier Reef face. Navy ship nearby though.
Been there done that 40 ft boat rough seas 10 miles out, after about an hour you realise you are not going to sink, it is just bloody uncomfortable , wet , with not much to eat as going below is a hassle and can hurt.
Here is his blog. It hasn't been updated since Dec 24 2014.

Spring is on the way in BC..maybe he will give it another go?
No shame either way...
Ocean cruising is not all idyllic tropical anchorages off palm fringed beaches.
True enough, I did a leg of the WRW on flyer skippered by tuff as nails Dutch man and decided it wasn't for me. so while I envisaged sending my retirement sailing, I am now in udon along way from the sea.
555 right!!... so much of offshore or even coastal cruising is about being cold, tired, hungry and wet while trying to maintain a tight sphincter....eating cold fare out of cans, sometimes discovering what you thought was beef stew was in fact coloured jello masquerading as strawberry jam.
