New Corvette Feature Keeps An Eye On Valets

Not that I plan on making any high end vehicle purchases in the foreseeable future, but this news item caught my eye. Didn't seem to fit into the Motoring In Thailand and Asia Forum, so here she be.

New Corvette Feature Keeps An Eye On Valets

    August 19, 2014

DETROIT (AP) — Face it. If you own a luxury or sports car, whenever you hand the keys to a valet, you imagine the car going on a high-speed joyride like the Ferrari in the 1980s cult movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

Now, General Motors has an option on the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette that takes those worries away.

The latest version of the sports car, due out in September, has a feature that records where the car goes with a camera mounted in the windshield trim. It also captures audio in the cabin as well as speed, engine revolutions per minute, gear position and G-force. That all helps the car tattle on any valet who doesn't take a slow, direct route to a parking space.

GM says it's the most extensive attempt by an automaker to thwart valet joyriders, although it's not the first. The automotive website Edmunds.com says Hyundai and Mercedes offer "geofencing," a feature that sets a perimeter and then notifies the owner's smart phone if a car goes beyond it. Chrysler has a valet mode that caps engine speed and horsepower, while Audi lets owners limit engine speed for valets.

With the Corvette, once the owner activates the feature with a four-digit code, the touch screen tells the driver it's in Valet Mode. But it doesn't warn the valet that he's being recorded. The feature also locks the glove box and a storage compartment in the dashboard and shuts down the infotainment system.

Valet Mode started off as a performance data recorder for those who take their Corvettes on the racetrack. GM engineers quickly figured out that it had more uses.

"Think of it as a baby monitor for your car," Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles said in a statement. "Anyone who has felt apprehension about handing over their keys will appreciate the peace of mind of knowing exactly what happened while their baby was out of sight."

Data and video from the valet mode can be viewed instantly by the owner on the car's 8-inch color screen when the car is parked, or it can be downloaded to a computer.

The system could go into more mainstream models if feedback is good on the Corvette, GM spokesman Monte Doran said.

The feature is paired with a navigation system and costs $1,795. A 2015 Corvette starts at just under $54,000.

The newest Corvette, the Z06- has a flat plane crankshaft. Ever wondered why Ferrari V8's sound so much different than N.American V8's ? Its because Euro V8's are flat plane cranks. I guess considering Corvette went to a flat plane for the Z06, it means the Wops were onto something.

Sounds like a cross between a wop exotic and a small block V8.

Your post loses all credibility, something you're not rich in, when you throw in outdated racial slurs. (you fucking twat)

If I knew your heritage there would be a nasty comeback...

Yeah. Most inline 4 cylinders are flat plane like this. The Z06 engine is like 2 inline 4's put together.

Have the Americans managed to get shut line gaps below 1 inch and resolved stuff falling off or peeling away, aside from trying to make it look like a European supercar?

The quality is on the level of a Buggati or Ferrari or any supercar really. Look at it

We've been here before, they look good and then have a build quality of a TVR

And how do they manage to get so little out of 6.2L, it always staggers me.

There should be questions how Ferrari and Lamborghini mated and the spawn popped out as an American.

well google told me 6.2L but what is 0.7 between friends, still doesn't explain why you need so much real estate to only go 185mph?

The days of Corvettes being dogs have been over for a long time is what I'm trying to say. These aren't the 70's anymore

Perhaps but the hour grows late and the days of combustion are nearing an end.

That's BS. But you know, the 70's was a long time ago.

2015 Corvette Z06: Faster than Lambo, Ferrari or McLaren

2015 Corvette Z06: Faster than Lambo, Ferrari or McLaren - The Big Picture

With lap times like these, it’s likely that the ZR1 would have very little problem breaking into the top 5 at the Nurburgring, putting it in company with the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 and Porsche 918. That’s not just supercar territory, that’s hypercar territory.

Electric cars are the latest hype bubble to come out of Wall Street. Its a new era, everything under the sun will go electric in 10 years right ? Bullshit. Electrics will come down to earth and find their niche. But they aren't taking over.

Basic math. Electrics havn't solved the iron laws of energy density. I don't even have a problem with them. I just have a problem with techno rapturists and hype merchants who make this fuckin stupid claims about them taking over. And claims about how environmentally friendly they are. All of these dangerous caustic chemicals have to be mined out of the earth (with fueled equipment) It makes more sense and better for the environment if we allow them to find their niche instead of governments getting on the techno-topian bandwagon to mandate them.

Todays best gas engines have a 13x energy density advantage by volume and a 50x advantage by weight

It doesn't surprise me that you are buying into the techno-rapturist hype. I think hybrids will make a comeback once the hype around electric wears off

Anyway here is how much co2 it costs to build an EV on the left and a ICE on the right

This is what a hate about electric cars. You can't have a discussion about a normal gas powered car without some horses ass coming along and turning it into an argument about muh electric cars taking over

Backspin ignores the fact that all major nations are moving to EVs. The ICE is being pushed into classic status by the legislation needed to be seen as green.
You might or like it, but until the EV is adopted on a global basis, any innovation and economy of scale can’t happen. Hence the legislation.

Dumb ass millennials like you are getting rarer fortunately.
