It's not exactly the fact that they ask me this question. It's the people whose first word to me is "where you from" that piss me off. Me sitting at a bar and suddenly the guy on the chair next turn to me and ask without any preamble "where you from". I feel it like pushy and crude. After all it could just be due to my education.

Adding that it's not because I'm also a foreigner in this country that I feel the desire to chat with another foreigner. I'm not easy going in socialization, I'v met so many a**holes here since 17 years.

My brother in law was and no-one was allowed to ask him where he was from even after an hours conversation.

If I were a french speaking swiss I wouldn't like people to ask me where I am from either. :)

I suppose a hearty, "Hey man where's a guy get good blow job 'round here?" would be more appropriate conversation starter.

You're sitting in a bar feeling somewhat garrulous you turn the dude next to you and ask, what? "How ya doin?" you get more than a grunt maybe the dude feels like talkin' So you ask, "Where you from?" (showing a polite, somewhat less than personal interest). Fuckin guys goes sullen and grumbles you know;
A. he's in no mood to talk to you
B. he's a fuckn prick that thinks every question is loaded with some sort of nosey intrigue and you really don;t want to talk to him.

A or B, no matter; there's always the barmaids & waitresses to chat with.

Far as the farang that walk around waiing everything that walks or breathes, ignorance. I think it humorous, they make me smile. I avoid conversations with them, they usually will be all too happy to bestow their infinite Knowledge of All Things Thai upon me.

I have never been offended by people asking me where I come from (probably because I like showing off :p), but after reading this thread, I think that from now on I will start responding with hostility - it sounds like a lot more fun than a polite reply....:cool:

True about greetings. Hi, how are you, followed by where are you from is polite. Or do you live here or are you visiting. And then you can go straight into a discourse on quantum mechanics or Rolling Stones trivia.

Frisco Frankie's post also reminded my of another peeve: the know-it-all farangs, most of whom have been in Thailand for about ten minutes.
