    Japan.

I have agreed a contract to work in Yokohama for one year for my Japanese company.
Any advice from those that have been there would be appreciated. I believe it's bloody expensive although an apartment and a living allowance is in the package.

Specifically, what's the social life like, the beer, the food etc?

these prices are 4 years old....

FOOD: Lunch at a restaurant: $17.39
Can of beer from grocer: $3.26
    One kg of rice: $6.54
    One dozen eggs: $3.72

    ENTERTAINMENT: Movie ticket: $19.50

    APPLIANCES: Washing machine: $630

About half an hour by commuter train from Tokyo, this port city has active shipping, biotechnology, and semiconductor industries. Yokohama is one of the world’s most expensive cities, but companies here enjoy lower operating costs compared with the nearby capital. Nissan opened a new headquarters in Yokohama this year and reportedly will sell its office in Tokyo to cut costs.

    It's like living with aliens.
If you fit in and like sorba noodles it's not that expensive.
If you want to eat steak you are fucked.

If you have the right attitude you will simply love it in Japan . . . easily the most beautiful country in Asia, with the most polite and respectful people . . . while the food and ladies are very, very tasty.

You can make life expensive or you can make it inexpensive - - - your choice.

Enjoy and mazel tov on the opportunity

Check this link for more information about living and working in Japan.

I visited Japan once and it was very clean and the people are very nice to foreigners.
Tokyo especially is very expensive, in fact it is one, if not the most expensive place to live in Asia.

Tokyo is noted as being the most expensive part of Japan but a great place for some adventure. Pubs are often rooms on one floor of a building or at least they were when I was in Osaka several years ago. Some are run by foreigners and you can meet a mix of both foreign and Japanese - The Lonely Planet guides are giving locations along with cultural tips and information on medical emergencies etc. Note: I don't know if this will apply to you but renting an apartment from a Japanese requires a deposit which is known as 'thank-you' money and is renewable periodically. I have no idea if this is still the norm but my guess is little will have changed.

Specifically, what's the social life like, the beer, the food etc?
Not clued up on the social life but the beer is OK and the food might take you a while to get used depending on your tastes. Some vegetarian dishes are quite cheap and tasty. Do be wary when asking for the bill in a restaurant, many Japanese still struggle with English 'l' sound their r sounding something like an 'r'. I asked for the bill and the young waitress brought me a pint of lager - much to the amusement of the two young Japanese in business suits sat opposite who had seen and understood what happened! Also be aware when Japanese give directions they count streets differently from us so you might go one too many (or was it one less? - can't quite remember). Should you visit any museums, aquariums or such, try to avoid it when school kids are there - you haven't heard the noise they make - bloody unbelievable!

Very rich culture plenty to find out about - so have fun.

I live in Tokyo for eight years and really enjoyed it. I left in 1999 and I'm sure things have changed a bit, but it was loads of fun socially and there's always something going on. The crowds (especially during rush hour and at shopping spots on weekends) can get on your nerves, but I was generally able to avoid them.

Once you get a feel for the place and learn what's what and start to live like a local, it's not nearly as expensive as it is for a tourist- housing is the killer, and you're set in that department.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Another popular modern band Wagakki, I like the trad influence, but still prefer Babymetal! Some of the most fanatical followers of Thai music are Japanese.

In my time in Japan I was propositioned by exactly one hooker (not that there weren't any around, but they were interested in Japanese salarymen with expense accounts), and it was a Thai chick.

If you're a decent-looking guy with any game at all you'll do fine without resorting to paying for sex (unless you consider buying drinks and dinner 'paying for it').

You included everyone in your 'we' - and shouldn't judge others by your on standards . . . and how is that being a 'fvcking pious hypocrite'?

Skimming through U Tube on Japan. Some good looking women from what I can see. Another strange thing I came across, no cookers! Every kitchen seems to just have a gas ring! Oh well, no cooking apple crumble like I did yesterday.
