Stuff you never expected to keep so long

I move a lot. I go through my things and keep seeing old "friends" I never use but can't part with.

My mum bought me a chess set in Mexico about 60 years ago. I still have a knight from that set.

My GF back in high school bought me a ring, 10k gold. Still got it.

Tools: That's where I can kick anyone's butt. I got tools from the 50s. I have the electric drill I used in wood shop in high school, still works, still use it.

Even clothes, got shirts from the 70s, still usable.

And this isn't stuff stored in my attic, I have no attic, this is what I've been carrying around since I got to traveling back in 1980.

God, the things I've lost along the way. You just never know what will last and what will disappear.

I've got all my old passports, starting with one issued in 1952, when I was three. My AV is the picture from that passport. Have never been without a passport since 1952, albeit three different types.

stored all my gear in a friend's basement until i would return.

    that was everything i owned.
thought i'd be about 6 months gone but 3 yrs. in i was in aussie land trying to make dosh to get out when i heard my buddy had died 6 months before.
His mum moved back to Wales when he died.
And all my gear disappeared with the sale of the house.

went round to the house where he lived and a paki answered but couldn't speak english.

so everything that was,, had gone, including my friend,, brown bread.
absolutely everything from my past was wiped out.
    it had a cleansing effect.
i had arrived back after 10 yrs instead of 6 months.

I had a life long collection of LP vinyl records that I carried around with me since my first one at 14 years old .

Could never bare to sell them as I loved looking at them and the feel of them.

Anyway, when I retired last year I told my mate he could take his pick and I sold the rest.

Broke my heart doing that but just had to get ride of stuff.

Photographed the lot before moving them though.

Still have every passport Ive ever had and a cracking baby photo from when I was 6 months old.

Mum burnt the rest of the family photos after she went mad after a stroke.

    Bummer that.

    Good thread by the way.

My grandfathers gold watch containing a picture of my grandmother and a lock of her hair, the watch was with him all through the First World War.
Yet I have nothing of real sentimental value of my fathers.

My teddy bear is 50 years old, he is a bit bald and sometimes can still growl. My Aunty from Australia gave him to me when i was a day old.

I also have a zebra skin drum my parents bought in Africa 60 years ago. Can still beat on it. (and no, my dad did not kill the zebra!!)

I still have the sofa from my parents house that I used to fuck my Swedish girlfriend on (she was an au pair locally). That couch was where I learned a lot of different positions, aged 17! When they moved to Scotland I took the sofa and it fitted perfectly (just like me and the Swede).

I have since had it reupholstered!

yeah, I still have a few from the 60's and 70's, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix etc. Not sure why as I cannot play them and had replaced them with equivalent CDs years ago
