But after looking through some photos of travellers visiting Thailand, it is easy to see why!

You can;t even fly to Darwin at the moment. All flights cancelled due to volcanic ash.

Thank you for mentioning that as I wasn't aware this was happening. I found some news articles that indicated Sangeang Api is the Indonesian volcano that's erupting. That's off the north coast of Sumbawa island, which is a long way from Darwin.

I have memories of that particular volcano from a trip back in '98 when I took a cruise from Bali to Komodo island to see the dragons, and en route we passed north of Sumbawa. The view of Sangeang Api on the return leg was magnificent as we were passing by during sunset and the mountain was in a minor eruption phase at the time. At 15 minute intervals, the mountain would emit a fountain of lava from the summit. That combined with the cone shaped silhouette against the setting sun was quite spectacular. I wondered when the mountain might go into a stronger eruption phase. I think it would be a bit scarier to cruise by there now.
