    There's a storm brewing.

There's a major dirty fight brewing worldwide. Millions of smokers are switching to vaping annually, and it pleases neither Big Tobacco nor national and state governments who rely heavily on staggering tax revenues from tobacco products.

So obviously the knives are out in a big way. Disinformation and pay-for-the results-you-desire 'scientific' studies are starting to fly around in gay abandon.

I'm just curious as to the smoking and vaping population on a general board like TD. Would be nice if you could tick a box please?

Nicotine I have no problem with. Just like I have no problem with caffeine.

As for the rest, like everything else in life it's a balance between enjoyment and safety.

More and more people are giving it away for good.
Smokers are in the huge minority now, I'm always surprised to meet a smoker these days.
no one I know does anymore.
What the fuck's 'vaping' by the way?

Yeah for me this is a large problem as well. First off the vapor is still exhaled into the air from the lungs, being vapor instead of smoke which is the byproduct of burning something and in essence sterilizing it, I think the vapor probably has far more potential to spread certain germs and certain serious illnesses such as TB for example.. It's like when someone is walking ahead of you or past you and then they sneeze or cough, especially without covering their mouth and it creeps me out, there is no difference, it's the same effect and possible result.

Secondly if the vapor contains nicotine it is certain that not all of the nicotine is ingested when brought into the lungs so exhaling will also contain various amounts of the drug being expelled for others to breath in secondarily.

We know this happens because you can also get a contact high when in close proximity to high amounts of weed being smoked.

Every time I see someone smoking one of these it makes me cringe even more so then a real cigarette.

Uhhhh. Do you suggest stopping breathing as well then?

Good thing you can't see exhaled breath isn't it. You'd have a hell of a time.

I've been smoking 30-40 a day for 45+ years. Have given up trying to quit, Carr may have helped, possibly, with great effort, but effectively I resigned myself to the inevitable. When I started vaping, that was it. Dead stop on smoking immediately. No cravings. Had a pack of cigs lying around and didn't even consider lighting one. Magic.

Nic patches and inhalers don't work. Smoking is more than nic addiction by far. Nic addiction is fairly minor and relatively easy to break. However, I have no desire to break it. It has some significant advantages.

For the non-paranoic who have tried vaping as an alternative to smoking and found it ineffective, a few things to remember, just off the top of my head.

Vaporiser is important. Those small cig-like things probably will make you fail. Which is why BT sells them. Get something decent off the bat.

Vaping and smoking are different things requiring different techniques. Vapor particles are much larger than smoke particles. Vapor particles cannot lodge in the lungs like smoke particles. Nic in smoke is mostly absorbed in the lungs, helped by the shitload of chemicals added to cigs to do that. Nic from vaping is mostly absorbed by the mouth and nose.

The ph level of your juice will greatly influence the free nicotine available.

I once quit for 9 years, somewhere in my 30's. Not once did I resort to self-righteous whining about how great i wuz, how shit smokers were, how glad I was to be such a sterling character that doesn't smoke. Or bitched about their smoke.

Any thread remotely touching on smoking attracts these sniveling idiots like flies. We've heard it all before, many times. Go tell your Mommy, she'd be right proud of you.

Take your self-righteous motherfuckin bullshit somewhere else, wouldya? Go save a fukkin whale.

Out of sight out of mind yes that is the problem, vapor not only visualizes it but it aids in transmission in how it's expelled, most people don't sit back and exhale into the air while just breathing, especially open mouthed, it does not have nearly the velocity that it does while smoking.

I can see it's calming you down quite a bit too. Sounds like quite a bit of self conscious and perceived righteous indignation there.. Well done..Feel better now?? Have a vape then..

I quit cigs back in January after smoking 20 a day for as long as I can remember.

I was having a hard time of it so I bought a pipe and I far prefer it. I still smoke the occasional cig if I want a quick nicotine fix out shopping or something but smoking the pipe a few times a day is much more relaxing and a nice ritual of packing, puffing and relighting etc.

Cheaper too by far, even compared to the ~40 Baht cigs I used to smoke. I tried a few imported tobaccos but finally I've settled to switching between the yellow Cat brand rolling tobacco at 15 Baht for a 50g tin (it's cig tobacco but it burns well if packed carefully) and a nice locally made pipe tobacco with a very pleasant vanilla scent and is 105 Baht for a 40g pouch.

I figure if I am going to have bad habits I might as well at least try to be frugal about them although I did treat myself to a nice briar pipe delivered from a place in Bangkok because nobody on Phuket sells proper pipes anywhere, although those stupid glitzy glass bongs and pipes are all over the place.

I tried the pipe thing, didn't work for me.

Why there is going to be a helluva lot of disinformation and bad studies:

    Tax revenue from tobacco UK

    Total £ billion
    1990-91 6.8
    1991-92 7.8
    1992-93 7.6
    1993-94 8.1
    1994-95 9.1
    1995-96 9.0
    1996-97 9.8
    1997-98 10.1
    1998-99 10.0
    1999-00 7.5
    2000-01 9.4
    2001-02 9.6
    2002-03 9.9
    2003-04 9.9
    2004-05 9.9
    2005-06 9.8
    2006-07 10.0
    2007-08 10.0
    2008-09 10.0
    2009-10 10.5
    2010-11 11.1
    2011-12 12.1
    2012-13 12.3

Thats the tax part of it, a drop compared to BT revenues.

What I'm saying is if you are going to form an opinion, mass media and politicians are not your friends.

I love the Old Holborn rollies, Golden Vagina is shite.

With the help of me E-Tab I have cut down by 50%, funnily enough I vape the menthol liquid.

Just give it away altogether, stop, don't do it, just say no.
Making the decision is the hardest part.

I just thought I'd raise the issue because I know how tough it can be to quit, if most areas of your life are calmish, near impossible if they are under serious stress. And how easy it was with vaping.

I noticed it being mentioned on here once or twice, and there were comments of 'it didn't work for me' so I thought I'd highlight the nic absorption issues.

I'm already getting used to the uninformed 'opinions' about the vapour etc., it will get a lot worse. BT, Pharma and Govt's are hard at work trying to discredit and ban it as far as they can. There's a lot of money at stake.

Rightly or wrongly I vaped the entire flight from Newcastle to Dubai discreetly, did two atomizers. (sp?)

Ran out for the BKK flight.

Flying back out tonight armed with two batteries and enough kit to last 12 hours.

    Best thing since sliced bread.
