That is pretty. Does it actually come out of the bottle purple? Anyways, I love any kind of wheat, weis or white beer and there's quite a selection on tap, as well as bottled, at the Beer Republic. Check it out: Beer Menu | Beer Republic Chiang Mai Sacra is out of the bottle (unfortunately) but it's a Spanish brew and pretty good. The little Spanish joint right next to Beer Republic serves it also.

Must have been too dark for me to see the purple. Looked like bock to me.

I didn't say they had that purple beer at Beer Republic! (there are the beers on the menu but they also chalk a few new ones up every night). But why not ask them to get it? The beers that are so strong usually taste a bit syrupy and heavy.

I just found a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale in my cupboard. I might drink it tonight but it must have been in my cupboard for at least 3 years. Will it still be drinkable? How long does beer last in a bottle? The label has a date of 30.11.07 but I don't know if that's the sell by/use by date or the production date.

When you open the bottle you should hear the normal “psssst” sound indicating that your beer is fresh and ready to drink. You should also see some white foam rising from the liquid after opening, lack of foam is another indication that most likely your beer has gone bad.

If you have bottles, even before opening you can check the bottle for clues like a dusty bottle, a discolored label and especially any seepage around the cap which indicates prior heat abuse. Some other possible traits of expired beer product are a change in the color of the beer or a “dusty” settlement visible in the bottom of the bottle. If these things are going on in the bottle, the beer has most likely gone bad and the taste will be “flat” and spoiled tasting.

There are, of course, certain health risks associated with spoiled food and drinks, so always remember to practice food safety and enjoy your product prior to the eat by date.

Newcy brown usually gets sediment on the bottom of the bottle when it's old.

Hold the bottle up to the light and check.

It tastes like shit when it's old.

Here are the results of the Newcy Broon Thousand Year Vintage Taste Test 2014.

Preparation
The 330ml bottle was refrigerated, in an upright position, to approximately 4C for 9 hours.

The procedure
The bottle was opened with a traditional bottle opener and an ear was placed approximately 2.5cm/1 inch from the bottle opening. (The “psssst” test).

The contents of the bottle were observed through the bottle opening (foam test part 1)

A highly sensitive nose sniffed at the bottle top (the sniff test)

The beer was slowly poured into a clear glass. The beer was observed closely to look for foam (the white foam test).

The contents of the glass were observed (foam test part 2)

The bottom of the bottle was inspected (the sediment test - part 1)
The bottom of the glass was inspected (the sediment test - part 2)

Beer was passed through the lips and onto the tongue (the taste test part 1).
Beer was swallowed in a repeated fashion until no more was left. (Taste test parts 2-10)

The bottom of the empty bottle was inspected (the sediment test - part 2)
The empty bottle was part filled with clean water. The bottle was shaken vigourously. The bottle was emptied of water. The water was observed. The empty bottle was observed again. (The sediment test - part 3)

Results
“Psssst” test: A small, soft "psssst" was detected. (Bare pass grade).

Sniff test: A familiar Newcastle Brown aroma was detected. (Good pass grade).

White foam test: Foam was observed at the two test points. However, the foam was brown, not white. (Bare pass grade)

Sediment test: Sediment was detected in the bottom of the bottle. No sediment entered the glass upon serving. (Pass grade)

Taste test: Our volunteer tester said the flavour was similar to the expected flavour of "Newcy Broon" but there was quite a heavy malty taste to the beer. The beer was also sweeter than expected and gave an almost sherry like after taste. This was judged (on the Neverna scale) as being not quite up to the usual NBA standard but an acceptable evening beverage. Further evidence of its acceptability is that the whole bottle was dispatched without incident. (Satisfactory pass grade)

Conclusion:
7 year old Newcastle Brown Ale is drinkable. Our tester is still alive and no vomit has been observed. The cumulative test result: Pass grade.

Recommendations
1. For Newcy Broon fanatics, genuine Geordies and fans of foreign beer: it is recommended not to wait 7 years after production to drink one's beer.
2. For alcoholics, full moon party-goers, foreigners and southern pooftahs with loads-a-money: it's a perfectly satisfactory drink to imbibe, either alone or with friends.
