The serious kid 3rd from right is probably thinking why he hasn't been issued with a pair of wellies. Dirty work this soldiering lark you know.
I'm more akin to the lad to his right about to burst into laughter at the sight of the sergt's funny lid. Mind you I have also worn one or two myself as an adult when I should have known better.
My Father served during the Korean conflict as a member of the Naval UDT/Raiders teams.....moved on to Naval Intel.
Recruited by the NSA, under the State Department, for the SE Asian wars - where he acted as field analyst largely directing MACV-SOG throughout Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
More fascinating [and heroic] were my maternal grandfather's adventures throughout North Africa and Southern Europe during the second world war. A gunnery sergeant on a B-17, manning the ventral belly ball turret.
Made 50 missions - half of them covert. Had the honor of transporting General George Patton to meet with General Omar Bradley when Patton was deemed out of the "doghouse" - entering back into the final push into Europe.
Half-a-dozen Purple Hearts [clusters], Distinguished Flying Cross, and Congressional Medal of Honour.
Quiet guy - didn't talk much about it.

Old man was serving his apprenticeship down at the shipyard building the HMS Ark Royal. He developed a bad stammer from the air-raids that stayed with him for the rest of his life. Later helped to build destroyers that saw service in the Falklands.
Mum was evacuated along with her brother to Corwen in North Wales and taken care of by Britain's longest serving game-keeper.
Had a Granddad serve in WW1 and suffered from the effects of mustard gas until his dying day.
Don't really know much more about my Grandparents involvement because I was too young to be inquisitive and later on in life I wasn't interested. It's only now that I wish I knew more about them to pass on the knowledge to my kids.
My uncle died in a concentration camp.
He fell out of the guard tower.
rat-a-tat-*ching*
Who peeled the potatoes and onions ? , don't be shy name names ,
Dad Wasn`t born until 47, but My grandfathers both served. One was in the RCT and was involved with the push into Germany. He was the only one in his section to survive a convoy ambush in Germany. He saw all his mates gunned down when they stopped to move a felled tree.
My other grandfather was in the Artillery and was also somewhere in Germany. I know very little of his service, other than that.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong
I`ve been dragging my heels with a bitch called hope
Let the undercurrent drag me along.
I hope all these posts here aren't coming from all the SAS men living in Pattaya ,
All I know is my Grandad served on a minelayer, earned Pacific and Atlantic Stars (With France and Germany Clasp) and at some point served on HMS Apollo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Apollo_(M01)
I know he visited Australia on HMS Apollo as I have a silver powder compact he sent to his mother with an inscription.
Unfortunately, he died when I was around 8 before I had chance to ask him, and my father - the only person I could ask for further detail - has also now passed away.
But, this thread has given me a bit of inspiration to try and find out a bit more. I'll do a bit of research to try to find out a bit more based on what I have - I have a Royal Navy medal award sheet with his number on so that's a start.
Quick google leads to this site: British Army medal index cards 1914-1920 | The National Archives
Looks like it might have some useful info, I'll make this a little research project when I get time I think. Even if I can only find out what unit he was in and where they served etc - rather than any personal details - it'll be interesting and worthwhile.
Thx koojo..I scanned dad's photo from the hard cover ( have the set) signed by Spike to my dad. Not sure what your after...Think if you google may be able to get e-book but maybe blocked from China?
Which battalion/unit in your dad's photo?..Spike, dad et al (D battery) also in N Africa .....book "Rommel..Gunner Who"
