Thread: There's a rat in me kitchen what I'm a gonna do ....

Well, not in me kitchen but in the roof space above the kitchen. The problem is that the neighbour has a loose tile to their kitchen roof and Mr Rat has gotten in there and occasionaly passes over to our roof space and dances a noisy fandango.




I informed the neighbour about this yesterday and hopefully he will fix it. Told his MIL that I was prepared to fix it for her but she just shrugged . Apparently they are a family in crisis so this is a low priority even though its a 5 minute job.

So I went out and purchase some state of the art rodent persuaders at 20 baht a go




I spent some time fiddling with these trying to figure out exactly how you set them and I have a couple of scars to prove it. That spring is exceedingly vicious and skinned me a couple of times until I treated the device with a modicum of respect. I started using these when handling it





In England they are known as heavy duty gardening gloves but I think the Aussies call them ' poofy pommy mitts ' For the sake of brevity I will refer to them as Loy Toys because its shorter he will appreciate the honour.

Finding that it was not functioning to my satisfaction I bent the central prong back and set it like this :

Now Mr Rat in theory will stand in the killing zone , yank on the fish sauce impregnated carrot, and almost instantly ........go to meet his ancestors.





I climbed out on the projecting kitchen roof yesterday afternoon, pushed up a tile and placed the trap for easy removal. Note the big plastic sheet underneath to catch all the blood and gore.




Later that evening at about 7.30 pm they was an almightly crash bang wallop and I had visions of




Mrs Bangyai thought otherwise as their was no death dirge or sound of dying rodent.

Ms Bangyai was right. Climbed out there this morning to find the trap sprung but no Mr Rat. Later on in the evening about 10 oclock there was a lot of painful rat squealing that lasted about a minute so I am hoping Rat met Cat and that's that but just in case I have set two more traps in the same place tonight.

I will keep members updated and post all gorey pictures if I manage to catch that rat. In the meantime ......some music

You are setting it with the release rod too far into the hole.
It should be right on the tip.

Anyway the glue trays are a lot easier to use and I find them very effective.

I like the sticky paper works real good, you get 1 on there & his friend come to take a look.

Had a few of these blighters in my overhead but with the judicious application of a few of these baited with cheese - bye, bye Mr. Rat!

Use a 1/4 of a hot dog as bait.

I put a rat trap (without teeth) in our roof years back, and during breakfast there was a loud bang, after which there came a loud flapping as it tried to get out of the trap, and lots of wheezing, all diminishing very slowly and gradually as it was basically suffocated to death. Us breakfast-goers were horrified.

Anyway..........I had completely forgotten about the sticky traps. I'll invest in a few tomorrow if I don't succed in decapitating any tonight. As for the release rod...yes I moved it to the edge once it was in place but for safety whilst handling I had it well back.

As for the cages


Do they kill or just catch. No point just catching it. Gotta do for him proper.

Like the cobra idea but I can't easily drive one up there.

glue traps are the way to go.... BUT if you have a large roof space you need to anchor them. I suggest fishing line to the nearest roof access point and a pencil or a piece of wood to indicate it the trap has moved. You also need to check each one every day as they decompose very quickly and the stench is very hard to remove.

I use the cages. They catch, not kill, but are very good for catching even big buggers. Then, once captured, you have options: You can drop the cage in a barrel of water and drown them; you can put it over an open fire and cook them; or, if you're a sporting chap, you can turn them loose outside your wall and give them a two second head start before you release your dogs....fun for the whole family!

Yes Mid....but over hear cheese is expensive and I begrudge a rodent destined for death even a small chunk of my precious supply. I reckon that if curiosity killed the cat then it probably won't do the rat a lot of good. The fishsauce soaked carrot is plenty smelly enough to warrent investigation and now the traps are on the hairline trigger I'm hoping for a result....always assuming that the neighbors cat hasn't already killed him ( see first post )

Yeah, I don't like traps/poison because you could get anything in them, they're indiscriminate... Just get a cat like everyone else, easy...

Glue traps work best for me. A blob of peanut butter as bait is supposed to be best because the smell of it lasts for days.

Had 5 stuck on one trap once when a nearby field was being cleared for building. Got 17 of them in the space of 3 days.

Make sure that cats can't get into your crawlspace. A cat chasing a rat in there will have your ceiling crashing down when the moggie smashes into the wiring holding up the tiles and framework.

A piece of bacon is better than cheese.

Have to be a pretty small kitten to squeeze through that hole ( see picture 1 )

I empathise with Betty on this but apart from the noise there is the worry that it will breed up there not to mention eating electrical wires etc.

If the bloke next door would fix that tile the problem would not have occured. Unfortunately he has been caught by his wife with a couple of giks he met using LINE and thus is preoccupied sorting out his domestic affairs.

They are library photos. If by 'bait' you mean the female Magpie, it looks OK to me. The food container is meant for that Magpie so she doesn't get hungry...

Or simple put the cage in a black garbage bag and wait.

If squeamish best plan is to release said rat next to that neighbour's house that doesn't like you or complains to the police about your dog barking or,or,or..
