I've heard mixed reviews on them. Most smokers I know have at least tried them, some with success, but they're still using them, so I'm not sure if that's quitting, or just taking your nicotine in a more socially acceptable and healthy way, some they don't work for.
Mr NR has had one for about 6 months. He did fine with it for about 3 days, then the novelty wore off. He's still smoking cigarettes, but uses his e-cig when we're cuddled up on the sofa watching something and he doesn't want to move (we live in a no-smoking flat). Not sure that's how they're supposed to be used...

A mate of mine uses nicotine spray, just one little spray under his tongue when needed.

Dilly, I tried everything, and in the end, cold turkey.
But they are affordable in SEA, but in the west they aren't.
So back to Aust or the UK even.
And do my time in the cold weather.

It does take some doing - as turps is indeed a fine drink.

The NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) props, gums, patches etc, don't really help you break the smoking "habit". They just prolong the agony, imo.

In 3 hours I will have been stopped for a week , not one has passed my lips yet. It does seem to be getting harder though. When those cravings come, they come with a vengeance and great frequency now.

Think I'll pop out and have a few beers to celebrate

If you get one, go for iTazte. They are the best brand I've come across.

iTazte VTR is their newest one.

    A real test, alright.

I'd head down to the local once a week while I was quitting, have a few jars and enjoy them to the max.

What I found was that if I drank with gusto the urge to smoke was negated, I really savoured the beer,...Guiness.

I didn't feel the urge to smoke after a few big gobfulls of beer.

I carried a leaf of lobelia in my wallet in case I was sorely tempted to smoke, and if I ate a bit of it, it had the added effect of lessening my urge to drink too, so double benefit.

My alcohol consumption since has more than halved.

And your liverish irritability seems to have doubled.

    Keep fighting it Dillinger !
Us human beings are a strange lot, the way we have both a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. The latter is connected to our feelings and can affect the conscious mind. So it's weird how we can sometimes be fighting ourselves.

Make your conscious mind the master. When you get the urge to smoke, perhaps remind yourself of how it would be if you died and left your daughter without a father. Or your wife without a husband. This will be such a strong feeling that it should override the feeling to smoke. And remind yourself that it gets easier with time.....after this period of crisis.

I WANTED to quit at the same level for five fucking years. in fact, for a full year after the diagnosis I tried cold turkey a few times. Without the drug I failed at each attempt. Wanting to quit is not, always, in and of itself; enough. SO, that might be the part of your post not confusing just calling BS.

Did it cold turkey, but using the Allan Carr book: Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking (Free Download from Rapidshare and Mediafire) | Free eBooks Download - EBOOKEE!

    Best book I ever bought.
I read that book 8 months ago. I smoked my last cig as I finished the last chapter. I haven't had a cig, or any desire for one, since then. I couldn't believe how easy it was to stop once I'd read Easyway, I'd gone through agonies trying to give up through willpower and nicotine replacements. After reading Carr's book I had no problems at all giving up. I didn't stop drinking or start avoiding other smokers, other than not smoking I made no changes to my lifestyle at all. I'd recommend this book to anybody who wants to stop smoking, it may save your life and it costs no more than a pack or two of cigarettes. That money saved in the pic below is UK Pounds.

What's the crux of his method ?
Understanding that the only reason you want a smoke now is that you're getting withdrawals from the cig that you had 20 minutes ago. Understanding that the only real pleasure from cigs is the stopping of withdrawal symptoms from the previous cig. And, finally, observing what actually happens when you need a smoke and realizing that these allegedly terrifying withdrawal symptoms never last more than a few minutes and are easily overcome. Most methods try to terrify you into not smoking but they don't work because in reality none of us believe we will ever get cancer .

Carrs method makes you feel like a bit of a tit for smoking and that works because being a bit of a tit is, in reality, far more terrifying and far closer to home for most people than having tumours on your lungs.
