For the Oldies wherever you are from..

For the oldies from wherever..just for laughs!:

So what stands out in your memory?
Left my secure job in the Post Office Telephones and my little green van at the age of 21 when me and my best mate boarded the S.A orange at Southampton for Port Elizabeth South Africa.

Some of the stuff I remember:

Whelks, shrimps and cockles as a Sunday night looxury supper with bread and marge or even butter sometimes

Rag and bone man giving a goldfish for a few old clothes

Digging potatoes and turnips on dad’s allotment in the freezing cold rain.

Borrowing dad’s car coat to put the dustbin out in the rain and finding a 3/6d (liberating it of course)and a packet of three with only two..Announced the fact over dinner. Strange how the house was so quiet for a few weeks?

M&D buying me a Morse code and buzzer key for Xmas and dad teaching me …
    .
My sister (15yo) coming home with lipstick on..Mum nearly killed her!!

Fishing for anything in the river Lea.

Eating garlic sausage at my Polish friend’s house and my dad threatening to kill me for smelling like a wog.

At 15 Buying and restoring a Lambretta LD, new paint and refurbishing the engine...at 16, first time out, flying off the road and bending everything… then taking it to friend’s house to make it better to avoid getting the shit beat out of me or getting banned from driving it.

Hearing my dad saying the word “fuck “for the first time ever when he sheared off a bolt on the big end of his Hillman Minx after replacing the white metal bearings.

So just as a bit of fun ...bet you have some stories and memories..anytime anywhere?

Mum took me on a bus to the North Downs when we lived near Croydon, , so I ran down this massive hill, going too fast couldn't stop, so I ran into what I thought would slow me down a pile of straw looking stuff.

Trouble was it was a pile of chickenshit , so she made me stand on the platform at the back of the bus and pretended she didn't know me.

Shortly after first visit to the dentist, tooth out by gas, , sick as a dog afterwards.

Used to have to go to the pub in the car with Mum and Dad on a Saturday night, was allowed 1 drink of orange plus 1 bag of Smith crisps, , all my mates got some kinda beer shandy, I got pissed off one night with this boring caper, so I took 2slices of bacon in my pocket and poked em into the rims of his headlights.

Brilliant listening to him explaining to the neighbour when we got home.
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

Sainsbury's shops being tiled in brown & yellow tiles and everything was bought at a different counter so you had to queue up several times to get served.
The cheese was cut with a wire and the assistants were more accurate than a laser.
Salt was sold in huge blocks the size of a loaf.

My first job was as a deer culler in The New Zealand, not actually paid employment, but the Gummint (at that time) paid out 5 Pounds a tail. Dragging the carcass home would have been impossible, as well I only had a Bicycle.
So some clever gummint fellow came up with this bounty and 1 Pd for a Bunny tail.
Quite a good living for a single fellow with no vices.

But the catch was, I am a sympathetic lad and the first time i got a good size buck in my sights, I froze and couldn't pull the trigger, on this one only.
I could quite happily blow the heads off a cute bunny.
But the magnificence of the standing stag was too much for me.
So my first real memory was watching my 5 Pds gallop away.
It Paid enough to buy my first car, a 36 Morris 8 sports no less, could make 50 MPH on a good day.
There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking

golf on a desert course with oil for the greens, you played with a red ball. Sports especially baseball and football. Growing up knowing how to water ski at 5 and having a ski boat and junk to tour the gulf. Every year a one month vacation, usually north Africa and Europe. But most of all the chance to go back to the USA every other year for 3 months. Got to see a lot of cool things before I was 12 and moved back to Marin County, Ca., USA.

The school I went to was very strict. Uniform was mandatory. I was second endest to my brother. We had 2 sisters. My folks couldn't afford school uniforms for us all. Due to the strict dress code anyone not wearing their uniform on Mondays was seen as a rebel and caned. My folks didn't want my sisters caned so they had uniforms of sorts, the blazer at least. For 4 years on school Mondays me and my brother knew we were going to be caned. My fathers attitude was to just laugh when we moaned. Fcuking twat.

Nice....my grandad had one when his haulage business started making him some money.

My other grandad only had a Hillman husky

    Boy was he jealous.

Still, when I was 4 years old he took me fishing on the Grand Union Canal at Tring. I saw a fish and was so engrossed at pointing it out that I fell in and went under. He pulled me to the surface by my hair then dragged me out. At that moment I saw a boat on the back of someones car and my first spluttered words were

    " Does that boat float ? "

We lived in Tring but my dad was poor then so in the winter my mum and he would sneak around the Bovis build site looking for wood to chuck on the fire.

I seem to remember Bill and Ben were my favourites as were rag tag and bobtail

On weekends we ( sis and I ) stayed with our poorer grandparents and my grandad used to buy every comic in the newsagents ...Beano and Topper etc for me and Judy and Bunty for sis.

He let me play with all his war service medals....and I lost them all

He went ashore as a driver on D Day + 1. Later saw his best mate blown up in a minefield. Also saw a German tank glow white hot after a flame thrower had played on it a while

Walking home from school and getting 1p sweets from Woolworth's.

Some Saturdays going to Picketts Lock leisure centre to play table tennis or badminton. You must've gone there Crepitas? W8 bus?

All standing football stadiums; every other weekend we'd drive up to my dad's parents in Ipswich, have an early lunch, then me and my dad would get the number 11 bus, carrying a wooden stool for me that he used to stand on when he was a nipper; not so sure his dad didn't stand on it the generation before...

Talking of sweets, when I started school a popular 6d purchase was a
' Jamboree bag ' which contained a few assorted sweets and cheap plastic toys from Taiwan.

My most vivid memory is how our PE teacher and coach invited me to a special session under the bleachers and started touching me .. down there, yes, down there. I told him to stop but he didn't seem to understand the word, no. This happened 112 times in my freshman year. I reported him in the end and he got fired. I don't know if I did the right thing but I sure felt dirty afterwards.

My relatives looking at me when I was laying in my carrycot on the day of my christening at 2 months old. In actual fact, the memory is now of having the memory rather than the actual memory which faded about 20 years ago.

I remember my scary yellow lampshade in my bedroom when I was about 1 year old.

I remember how the world seemed to stand still when I heard my mother talking to a couple of policemen when they announced that my father had been killed. We were staying with friends that night and upon our return home, the house seemed to be an empty shell without him.

The clearest memory I have of my father's voice was when we pulled up at a building site he worked at (he was a painter and decorator) and while I waited in the car (Mini Cooper) he shouted up to someone on the scaffolding "Oi! Pete, you wanker" in greeting. I also vaguely remember his voice telling my mum to leave me alone when I had locked myself in the loo to avoid yet another slap for doing something wrong.

I remember Walkers crisp packets being bigger than they are today, but they're probably the same. They're certainly a lot more expensive.

I remember the moment I knew I had fallen in love with the Midget.

I remember me nan giving 25p of the new-fangled decimal money.

That would cover Saturday Morning pictures (Banana Splits followed by either a
    Tarzan/Famous 5 movie).

Then across to the old open-air swimming pool for the afternoon (if you sun-bathed

on the roof and were a bit sly, you could see into part of the girls changing rooms )

To round the day off a visit to the local chippy for a small bag of chips 'and any scraps you've got please mister'.

    Happy days indeed.

    How old is old?

I remember 5p mix bags of sweets. Sweet cigarettes and sweet tobacco. Lucky bags that were a rip off even then, at 10p. I remember stealing my first and only ever item - a candy cane filled with sweets - and being marched back to the shop by my mum.
I remember building tree houses and dens with scraps of carpet & wood. I remember playing outside for whole days with friends, my sister and our dog. I remember advent calendars that didn't have chocolate in, just pictures behind the doors. I remember "Pong" played on a table being the only computer game. I remember people not having phones and using phone boxes which took 2p coins or 5p coins. I remember only 3 channels on UK tv, and the testcard during the day, because there was no daytime tv. Am I old enough to qualify?
