Don't get me wrong here I am not especially defending Pattaya, if people are happy where they have chosen to stay then fine with me.
But what a load of typical non factual Buttboy rubbish, there are many many more criminal and "High So" scumbags in the Bangkok metropolitan area, both Farang and Thai, than in Pattaya, it is just that they are mixed in with a greater number of people, but just like in Pattaya if you know where to go as AO posts chances are you will never have to interact with any of them.
There is a huge seedy sex entertainment industry also in Bangkok (eh Terry 57 ), and much of it is and have been taken over up by the criminal scumbag boiler room scammers laundering their ill gotten gains, Biker gangs and slimy Indian pimps and Thai mafioso, so Drew Noyes from Pattaya and the rest of Drummonds "scumbag targets" are real small fry in the criminal stakes compared to those assholes, a reason why Drummond "relatively!!" risk-free can target them, he has to be much more careful with the other guys as history show. (He has taken some risk and showing courage and tried to take them on before)
So any Criminal piece of trash Drummond get's is good news for all of us regardless of abode.
Then there is the Bangkok Pollution who is on such a serious level in areas, that you really should not expose yourself to it for to long a period of your life, unless you accept the damage done to your system. Pattaya has much much nicer air.
And hundred of thousand Bangkokians could find shelter in Pattaya when their homes where flooded, and good the same too, Pattaya has minor street floods regularly but nothing that drives people from their homes.
Then there is the traffic situation, although it is getting worse it is no where as bad as in Bangkok and much less of our time is wasted that way.
Last but not least we have yet to see "live fire zones", arson rampages or year's long political disruption paralysing parts of town.
Not much catering to westeners you can't get either, so all in all Pattaya is OK and probably just as attractive a place as Bangkok to stay, that is if you keep away from the sex tourist shit-hole areas, but that goes for both cities, granted though those places are much more in your face in Pattayas inner city due to the much smaller size, but as a resident you don't need to go there to get your shopping in.
Pattaya is certainly not a high quality world class resort by a very long shot, but neither is the big Mango Bangkok, unless you only read TAT and travel agent magazines, if you peel the thin veneer and natural business advantages of being a major capital away, they probably compare pretty evenly.
Thailand is a third world country and we have to take the good with the bad, main thing is that you are happy where you are.

All true larv, wen I first went to patty the only danger were the Germans hanging around the beach just for the rent a boom boom boy.
Now there are all kinds of pervs and degenerates.
Arabs, Russians, even Australians, what ever kind of Pond life you need its all available in Pattaya.
I tend to agree with you both, butt boy has a point but it has a Family emphasis as well and it has the bonus Butt boy can get his wienie sucked for chump change.
There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking
Pattaya is the archilles heal of Thailand.
The infrastructure and reputation does nothing but harm Thailands reputation and that of it's hard working nationals abroad.
It should be sent out to sea and sunk or at very least be made a separate state.

Idependence for Pattaya" a bloody good idea"
And there we have it Dillinger, you hit the nail on the head perfectly. There's a TON of guys living in Pattaya that rarely, if ever, go anywhere near where the shit it Pattaya congregates. And make no mistake, there is no shortage of shit in town and the amount is growing daily.
Seriously, if it ever gets to the stage where locals can't avoid going to places where sex tourists/wannabe hard men/shower dodgers hang out, I would move 45 mins down the road to Bang Chang (decent beaches, a fair sized expat community, a small strip of good little bars, half a dozen golf courses within throwing distance) and come to Pattaya once or twice a week for shopping runs and to catch up with mates for a few beers. That'd work.
Back to you basement, I bet yr mother hides you when she has visitors.
Nowadays I get as far into Pattaya as Foodland
Pattaya had its best time as long as foreigners were in the majority. That has changed, it's flooded with Thais now, and most restaurants and entertainment venues cater to them.
Pattaya is like all the other tourist towns in Thailand. In the 80s and 90s they were not all that bad and even though I preferred Phuket and Samui back then, it was still a place to party and meet other westerners. As has already been stated, there is a whole different Pattaya that most people never see. Get away from the beaches and there is a good social environment where a farang can feel comfortable and meet others who moved to Thailand from whatever other country they were born in. It is a city that is livable, even though I would probably not live there.
Thailand itself has changed quite a bit since I first started coming in the mid 80s. Phuket was paradise, in my opinion back then, and I always felt I could live there. Of course I was too young back then to be able to retire and wound up marrying an American women that kept me from going back for 13 years. Once I was divorced, I started going back and said to myself how it had changed and that Samui was the new spot I would like to live. I finally bought a place on Samui in 2005 and tried to spend as much time there as possible. It only took me about a year to realize it was not what it used to be. Long story short, I moved up country, sold the place in Samui and now live near Udon.
I am not a fan of Pattaya now and never have been one. I have been back and noticed everything already mentioned on this thread. It is now my last destination and would rather visit other beaches that line the entire Thailand coast. Phuket is still livable to me even though it has changed dramatically since 1985. Nothing ever stays the same and the changes always seem to be for the worse. Maybe I know more than I should about Thailand, or maybe I am getting old and cynical, but things don't seem to light the same spark.
Thailand has changed and my perception is that it is not for the better. With that said, I can't think of any other place I would want to live.
Can anyone name a place that wasn't more inhabitable 20 years ago?
Even if you could, why would you?
So what does Udon have that Samui doesn't ? or was it an economical decision. I remember reading about your love of fishing beforeOriginally Posted by rickschoppers
Rick is busy at the moment cleaning his guns, Udon is quiet and doesn't attract tourists.
I still love to fish, but living in Udon can't stop that. I used to drive from Phonix, Arizona pulling my boat to Sooke, British Colombia just to salmon fish. I would fly to Alaska and Baja California to wet a line, so distance does not keep me from fishing.
To answer your question, it was a wonderful Thai lady that swayed me from Samui to Udon. Sure there are a few others like me on this site.
