    Farang friendly Police

We have just been shopping, and was about to be stopped by the Police but he seen i was farang and waved us on.

I have been here around 13 yrs now and never been stopped by the police, but i have heard some really silly stories regarding farangs being stopped and cops screwing them.

What are the police like around were you are.?

The police like to do road-checks on the main roads into the city, the ring-road and a few places in the city. They like to stop drunk foreigners at night and the also like to play with the traffic lights on the main road in from Khon Kaen to get a bit of extra money.

Basically, they're a bunch of kunts and I do my best to avoid them.

I'm always waved through checkpoints outside of Bangkok or Pattaya.
Have been stopped once only near Mukdahan.

Been stopped once here in 15 years. Driver was going the wrong way on a one-way road. We were lost on some small back roads in a neighboring city and trying to get to the bank - which we could see. Motorcycle cop waved us over. Driver slipped him some cash, which he handed back. He checked driver's license - all good. He then asked if we were carrying weapons - we both were - two .45's. He then checked gun licenses and permits to carry. Had us follow him to a nearby substation, where he checked all gun permits on the computer- all good. He then escorted us to the bank. End of.

Been driving and occasionally riding around Pattaya since the 90's and have never been stopped once. Managed to get stopped a few times (for doing absolutely nothing wrong) while on highways around Thailand though but so has just about everyone else.

Bumped the rear of a Chinese hi-so's car once, a tiny bump, next to a few older ones, but he got snakey, called a cop who asked for my passport licence etc, I told him they were at home. He nodded, took one look at the little ding, pulled out a black felt marker pen and proceeded to draw with it on the black tar-sealed road around each vehicle, occasionally looking up at me with a grin. Meanwhile, I'd called my lady and she arrived, negotiated a pay-off of around 6,000 baht and that was that.

The cop just grinned, saluted and off he went, no problems, while the Chink went off to fix his car and I went home.

Turns out that the hiso was a low-so, he'd pulled this scam before, and the cop got his cut.

Never had a problem with Thai cops, otherwise, they're always polite, helpful and friendly with me.

I've been stopped loads of times and had to pay Tea Money but in every case, it was my fault. For some reason, I have had more moving violations here in LOS than all the other places combined!

Hooking a right out of Suk Soi 1 onto to Sukhumvit which is a 'No Right Turn' was the most egregious one so far resulting in the Motocye Cop following me 1/2 to Chang Wattana before I saw he was flashing his lights.

    Big tea money that time...

I am fortunate to have a police station just across the road from my house.

I'm pretty pally with most of them and got the usual invite to the Policeman's Ball a couple of weeks ago (Police Day).

They came a'knockin at my door a few years back when a farang was playing up in the area and wanted me to have a chat to him. It didn't end particularly well as he ended up in jail for a few hours.

They have also willingly assisted me when i had a problem with a farang so top guys in my book.

When i was away recently the boss man got transferred but before he left he gave the Thai uncle a 'free passage' permit should he ever be stopped on the highway.

    I must get a photocopy.

when the cigarette butt ban came in, on the streets of BKK, i got caught putting my cig

down a drain, i was on my way to a visa run and running late, i explained to the cop and he let me go.

Another time i stayed in a small hotel in suriwongse rd, i left and remembered i hadn't of got my key deposit back, so went back and the girl wouldn't give it to me, so went and got a tourist cop, who got it back sharpish.

Where I live the cops are part of the community and never a problem. It's the bastards that live outside your area that you need to be wary of.

As Marmite mentioned, plenty of road checks around Udon. They are normally in the same places and you can almost anticipate when they will be out. My wife always blurts out "police" and I have to chuckle. Only had to pay tea money once for speeding and it was my fault. Been stopped many times until I got my front window heavily tinted.

I believe it's best to be in agreement with Marms, as it is best to not have any association with these cnuts - the policing system here is nothing short of organized crime.

The Thais understand these things as well.....unless related, will have nothing to do with them and see policing in disregard.

Though, even throughout my years.....I've been related to high police/prison individuals and have had police friends, it's a rare instance that befriending you is sincere - usually indicates that they're looking for something.

Negativity towards general Thai policing systems. It is what it is.

It seems to be a sport in Udon to stop every farang that drives a nice vehicle. Better percentages for the BIB to obtain some tea money. I just wanted to decrease those percentages a bit.

I have been caught speeding in the car and no helmet on the bike. Usually a Bt300 fine. Fair cop we all know the rules. In most cases I've been given a ticket and a receipt.

Got pulled up on the bike outside Phunpin police station. I was escorted to the station and paid a documented fine of Bt200. I asked out of curiosity why it was only Bt200. He said I got a bonus for carrying a helmet but not wearing it.

Cop pulled me up in the car for speeding on the highway to Donsak. I was out of order. Wanted me to go back 40 Kms to Surat police station and pay the fine and I would miss my pre-booked ferry to Samui. "Can I just pay you the Bt300 and be on my way?"

Happy cop. TBF he did actually write out a ticket before seeing sense.

I would say there must be many dodgy farangs up your way, whilst we seem to have the better class of farang around Yaso.
