When we're getting air drops of food from Oxfam and fighting off gangs of teens armed with RPGs or, alternatively, reduced to boiling grass and eating tree bark, you can crow about your astonishing prescience but until then, I think most people will remain a little skeptical.
    OK let's say Zimbabwe then.

    Probably a better example.

....or do you think Thailand is "too big to fail"?

The problem is that it won't stop at $ 4bn if money laundering is allowed to continue here unabated.

You displayed a blistering misunderstanding of the HSBC penalty so it might be an idea to keep your opinion to yourself since it is equally ill informed.

off on a total and utter tangent but hsbc (and other's) latest atm card is so bloody stupid for one of its features. was in waitrose the other day when the cashier pointed out that for purchases under 20 quid, you dont need to enter your pin, you just swipe the card. "what if its stolen i say"? her response ? "we're not the bank". fuckin a

Don't be an arse. Yes, HSBC failed to prevent money-laundering but this isn't a court. In everyday language, they admitted money-laundering. If you want to think this means that I know nothing about the case, you are obviously free to do so but only an idiot of the highest order would be that stupid. Anyway, as I said, when the zombie apocalypse arrives, pop round and say 'Told you so'.

The dark grey list, which Thailand was added to last year contains the following countries:

    Ecuador
    Ethiopia
    Indonesia
    Kenya
    Myanmar
    Pakistan
    São Tomé and Príncipe
    Syria
    Tanzania
    Turkey
    Vietnam
    Yemen

The blacklist, which Thailand faced joining this year, currently has two countries

    Iran
Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)

Thankfully for us Thailand drafted and pushed new money laundering regulations through parliament, which came into force on 1st February, 2013.

I am qualified and licensed to handle this issue in Thailand, and have my own registered Thai company. This is why in the midst of all this I have still been able to have Thai cheques processed overseas. It is what I do for a living and I saw the look of terror on the Bank of Thailand Governor's face last Summer. That was one very frightened man.

The gulf between what I know and what you believe would fit forty fire trucks with room to spare, Zooheekock.

Given that this country can, and does, take a decade to agree on a new tax treaty you can believe the government had good reason to implement totally new anti-money laundering regulations in a six month time frame, especially since it could well knock more than 10% off Thailand's GDP.

It's a list make up by a group from the G20, they have no authority to do anything but make lists and give advise.
The list has nothing to do with drugs or corruption, but banking practices and regulations. Why are Afghanistan and Columbia not on the list, because they comply with the rules.

Iran has world bank loans and sell soil even with all these embargoes, strange the only 2 nations on the black list are both rogue states.

No one has the power to stop banks in Thailand trading, only other banks can refuse to deal with them, but as mine have Visa direct on them, any bank, or shop refusing them would not be in the Visa/MasterCard club. Jim

    You are correct.

None of this has much effect on the value of the Baht at all.

    This does...

    Trade balance
    Composition of GDP
    GDP
    Central bank policy

Afghanistan is on the list immediately above Vietnam, as an "improving" country.

    Afghanistan
    Albania
    Angola
    Argentina
    Bangladesh
    Cambodia
    Cuba
    Kuwait
    Kyrgyzstan
    Lao PDR
    Mongolia
    Morocco
    Namibia
    Nepal
    Nicaragua
    Nigeria
    Sudan
    Zimbabwe

You and Socal really don't get this do you? The lists are entirely about the proceeds of crime, especially drugs, counterfeiting and corruption, and the progress countries are making to prevent the money being laundered. Try using a visa card online in Pakistan or Indonesia and let me know how it goes.

    May as well give up.

If any country was on some sort of economic abyss and it's banks were to be banned from international trade, it's credit rating would be going down the toilet, it could not service it's sovereign debt.

    Fitch lifts Thai credit rating

Fitch Ratings has raised its credit rating on Thailand, citing a resilient economy and a more stable political environment.
The country's long-term foreign currency-denominated debt was raised one level to BBB+ from BBB, Fitch said in a statement on Friday.
The new rating is in line with the ratings assigned by the two larger US-based ratings agencies, Standard & Poor's and Moody's Investors Service. The outlook on the rating is stable.

Quite possibly but then your failure to provide even the faintest whiff of justification for the guff about how we are shortly to turn into one of Somalia, North Korea or Zimbabwe is even stranger. But just in case I'm off to stock up on ration packs, gold and ammo.

    This place is going down!

    1) Real Estate bubble about to bust- scores of empty new residential and commercial buildings. You can't continuously build and a bull's pace when your population is declining. Scores of property has been foreclosed and repossessed and the banks can't sell those either - there might be evil spirits living in them!

    2) Used car market bubble ready to burst - that no tax on new vehicles scheme the government put out devalued the used cars in Thailand by 20%. I know a member of the executive team of one of Thailand's largest banks and he told me that something like 30% of all those new vehicles purchased over the last 3 years are either up for repossession or have been repossessed already.

    3) The rice hoarding crappy scheme - that blew up in their faces. That fiasco in itself is enough to crumble the Thai economy.

    4) Tourism is down as flights are 3 to 4 times what they were in 2003. Plus the exchange rate is so bad that it is no longer as cheap as it was to travel to Thailand. The Thai smile has all but vanished.

    5) Exports are in the toilet and the country is in plummeting down a slippery recession slope.

    7) Corruption - no need to comment on that.

    8) Foreign companies are not setting up in Thailand anymore. Burma, Cambodia and other 3rd world dumps yes - Thailand no. It takes a minimum of 10 workers to do the job that one Westerner would do.

    9) Excessive over employment in Thailand- Thailand loves to tout their less than 1% employment rate. The reality is that a real company can't sustain by employing 50 times more workers than they actually need. Go to t mall and start counting the wastefulness of bodies propped up all over the place - 150 security guards and doorman, 1000 stockers, 5000 sales people, 500 stiffs passing out flyers, a amrching band of 20 parading through the place with picket signs that say 70% off with an inflated normal price, 300 screaming meemies presenting some crappy product pramotshun ka, ja, ka, ka - what a joke!!!

Baht at at least 40 to 1 US dollar by spring of 2014 if not sooner. Hold off on your transfers - you m̶a̶y̶ ̶ will be getting an extra $700 to $1000 a month a more on your pension checks!!

Been hearing that the Baht is about to collapse for years, reality the Baht is fairly stable. The Baht doesn't move much, it's the other countries that move, red shirts, floods and military take overs, no collapse.

What exchange rate you get depends more on the economy of your home country than what happens in Thailand.

If the west gets back into the green you may get a better rate, but that ain't happening this or next year. Jim

Just spread it out over a long period. I think many here, myself included, have sent well over 20K to a Thai bank without any questions.

...........and I hope you are right Chitown since I will be transferring much of my savings over the next 18 months or so to Thailand. After that I will be back making my $1800/mo from SS to live on. I would love to see 40 per dollar as I finish my working career for good.

well poster Thormaturge, i found out yesterday the pleasure of Thailand being on this exclusive blacklist..

    went to my bank to transfer money to thailand, as i have done countless times in the past with no probs, no hassle but this time it was very different. in fact they said i had to go to the bank in scumhampton centre as they piddly l'il branch couldnt handle it. was asked;

what will the money be used for ? er, hookers, drugs and AR-15s?
does wifey have leave to remain?
do you have other accounts in thailand?
how much is your home worth? mind ur own beeswax

and so on. apparently you only have to face this interrogation once and after its all simples

I am pretty sure you have to identify yourself when buying pre paid credit cards.
