Yes, but in heavy winds that can get abit annoying.

    Anyway, QC, I just checked.

    LaserPerformance - Home

$3,200 brand new. (not including shipping and/or customs fees)

I was thinking of the Sunfish LaserPerformance | North America - Home Those can go over unintentionally, too. For the money I think I'd go with the Hobie Bravo, also flippable, from the looks of it maybe more stable and also can be righted (if you're heavy enough, I guess) Bravo : Rotomolded Sailboats : Hobie Cat

That sounds far too sensible. Damn the torpedoes and full steam ahead!

It may be ugly and unstable when purchased, but by the time I have finished with it it will be fucking hideous and unstable, so there. A vessel so unsightly and so obviously unseaworthy that mariners across the 7 seas will run screaming at the mere mention of the SS Cornholer.

My little pipe-dream of the SS Offis Rocker is on the back burner, probably until the new year as I don't think I will be going into the ocean any time soon.

Tie a sheet to a broom and then stick assembled sail up rear oriface. Invest in a snorkle if your budget can stretch that far. Very plain sailing.

QC - I hope that the medical issue was nothing to do with testing Bangyai's suggestion.

My apologies because I see that the conversation has moved on somewhat whilst I was avoiding work and doodling away, but if you do ever decide to try to make one of these things sail then my suggestion would be something like this (apologies for the crap artwork):

Comos seem to do some form of plastic bin things that are about 60 cm x 90 cm. I'd get two of them or something similar, fill them with that expanding foam stuff, then strap the bins on tight. This would sort out the buoyancy and the stability as well as allowing you to have a slightly taller mast which would probably help get the thing upwind a bit better.

The more polished approach might be to cut the bins so they fit well against the hull/streamline them a bit then fill 'em with foam and glass them in, but it could be a bit of a faff.

I'd then cut a vertical slot in each bin to take a leeboard (same theory here as a Thames barge). Might need a bit of precision as I think that they are meant to 'toe in' a few degrees to give you some upwind lift (put it this way, if they are angled out then you'll end up going sideways so may as well not have them).

Next step I'd do is knock up a sort of T shaped wooden plank affair with the top of the "T" running between the gunwhales and the vertical bit of the "T" running to the bow (like a sort of king plank). Make a mast sized hole in the intersection of the two "T" bits and then glass/bolt something fairly solidly onto the hull immediately below to act as a mast foot.

Bung on some loop things to tie the shrouds and forestay onto (the wires to hold up the mast). Add a mast, boom sail and a rudder and then...

    ...well, good luck.

Thanks for helping me to while away an hour or so - please do carry on with your conversation everyone. QC - hope the medical issue resolves itself.

^ ha, yes, the colour did seem to be the primary concern for his design.

"Seaworthiness - wot's that? Well, only include it if it comes free with the blue ones" sort of thing.

That kid is probably about 60 kg, and the boat is almost capsizing. You will not get one adult, let alone two in there.

However, if you can find a 'blue' boat and prove me wrong, happy sailing. Start by ringing/emailing the varuna club in jomtien, they might have contacts down south.
For an Ozzie you don't know much about sailing. The boat is not "almost capsizing".
The kids is putting his body weight in the best position for down wind.
Heeling the boat over, "on purpose", to reduce drag.

My mate adopted a kid, he joined Varuna and now his child is one of the better sailors in Thailand.

Well, I'd be lying if I didn't say that it crossed my mind to use Ocker as a test subject for Bangyai's boat design but Ocker chickened out because he said that the snorkel would clash with his blue rinse or something. I dunno, I don't pay much attention to his rantings.

Please don't apologise, lots of very helpful suggestions in your post, and your design is remarkably close to what I had in mind. The T-shaped wooden thing is a very good idea because the little cover over the bow seems way too flimsy to hold a mast, even with stays.

I've got about 30 empty 25 litre containers sitting under the house that I don't know what to do with so I was thinking to utilise a few of them, I feel they will lend a certain elegance to the vessel!

main prob with plastic dinghy is the practical impossibility of repair by a DIYer.

If you want to sail one you will need a centre board version ...don't know how you would retrofit in a flat bottom?

better take some practical lessons in sailing in any event...learn the basics like righting the boat from knock down.....dinghy sailing is fun but often very wet..After some lessons you will have sufficient knowledge to choose your poison methinks

A Laser ,Sunfish etc would be rooftop/truck bed or trailerable..not cheap though

Good points in your post, thank you for that.

I have a friend who is experienced with working with fibreglass and resins etc, he reckons that cutting a slot in the boat and then building up a mount for a stabbing board should be do-able, so that would be how we'd go about it.

That's the thing, for the amount of time I would spend in it I can't currently justify shelling out the money for something like one of those (although I'd like to). Also this could be a fun learning experience of how NOT to go to sea so there's that!
