I think that's the key. If you are doing it because you want to and can stop whenever you've had enough, then it would be great fun.

I would imaging if you were doing it because you had no choice financially, then psychologically you wouldn't be in a very good place and it would be a nightmare.

I would definitely go with a van rather than a car. It wouldn't take long for your body to suffer if it wasn't able to stretch out when sleeping.

Also you'd be surprised how much personal gear you would want to take and how much room it all takes up in a car. Would be a struggle to do it for more than a week in a car IMO, but a small van would be a lot different.

Camping

When I was a young punk ( 1976 ) my mate and I engaged on a road trip from Perth to Townsville in Far North Queensland. Around 6 K road trip.

We left Perth in my HR Panel Van full of beer and a few supplies arriving in Townsville around 2 months later.

Awesome trip and the van was our home, easy when one is 19 years old. :)

Did a similar thing with my girlfriend around the same time, not exactly cross country but Brisbane to Port Douglass and back in an HR station wagon. We tented it though and spent a week in the bush right on the beach at cape trib.
Wish I still had those photos.

I had a couple of times where I ended up sleeping in a car for a time.

First was after Uni and couldn't find any decent digs near to work. I ended up sleeping in the swimming pool car park, getting up early for a mile swim before walking a couple of miles to work. Laundrette did ironing and work had a canteen so I wasn't too bothered. Always turned up to work well dressed and no need to pay poll tax.

Second was when I had a house, money and a well paid job. No hotels near work so I stayed in a car much the same as the first time, except the car was bigger and I had to drive to work. Good early morning shower and swim made me feel pretty healthy though.

It´s a choice. If not by choice then it would be pretty hard for me.

I am in Peru now and will head to Bolivia and Argentina next.

Will end up back in the US though.

A truck would work, but a van is preferred.

get a van Barbaro,chuck a mattress in the back and plaster it with gun club and tae kwon do stickers.
Park on the forecourt of somehere that has little to be stolen and wont be so security concious, like a church or swimming pool

Buy a caravan, dave would have loads of advice.

Another way to go is to buy a Station Wagon and tow a covered box trailer, throw all your shit in that.

The most important part of road travel is to be out of the weather and have a good nights sleep. A station wagon, panel van or camper with a decent mattress is perfect.

Next thing is to have a bottle to piss in so one don't have to go outsides in the middle of the night.

I'm a bit of an Expert as Ive done many road trips, must scan up some of my very early Pics.

Anyway, its all about getting a good nights sleep, end of story.

When one progresses from sleeping in the the car to stepping up to a Van one never looks back.

I mean having that extra level of comfort is foking brilliant.

I just did for a couple of weeks. I was in Western Australia with my son and my brother lent me his Land Cruiser troop carrier which was converted for camping. We drove all over the place staying in caravan parks. It was awesome.

Yes, I have gone over the logistics of pissing, and yes, sleeping is important.

With the vans available and technology these days, it can be quite comfortable.

Stay in truck stops at night. They have showers for rent, a $1.25 when I was driving if you did not buy fuel. All of the big truck stops have good places to eat. They are safe and have plenty of company to chat with if you want. I spent the last year of my working life driving team with the ex wife from the east coast to west coast non stop.

There are truck stops everywhere in the states.

its a pity that Thailand is too bloody hot, I spent many a happy nights in most countries, in boats, campers, and on the ground, in various counries. tried it in thailand but sweated all night, in a boat.

I spent 8 months travelling Australia in a troopy. Was travelling alone but took backpackers on various legs to help with fuel and for some company.

I had a swag that would lie on the solid roof racks. If weather was bad I could sleep inside. Most important thing was to carry plenty of water.

i dont think a (regular) car is feasible...

the problem is, that you cant park everywhere...
you might wish to spend the night in rather populated areas, but the populated areas use to get a nerves problem, when they see someone sleeping in the car in their street, in front of their house... blah, blah...

not sure about the US, but in other countries, you might end up at lonesome parking spaces near the highways (as supermarkets etc are closed at night) or be bound to camping areas, where you have to pay - more with the car than without a car...

sorry, im sure about the US... i slept at night there in a rental car on a parking space, where there were trucks, next to a highway (florida)... not sure, but not long then a police officer knocked and informed me, that i couldnt stay there...
