Did you learn anything at school?

Does anybody actually remember anything much of what they learned at school? The things I actually remember are far more abstract than I ever would have believed, when I was at school.
I remember learning how to wire a plug and about the kitchen triangle (fridge, cooker & sink) and how to make sauces in Home Ec. I remember whole poems or Shakespeare soliloquies from English. I can't remember who invented the Spinning Jenny or a lot of stuff I did in History. I did O levels in Chemistry, Physics & Maths and can't remember a thing from any of them. I can hardly remember a word of French, yet I did it to A level. Sort of makes me wonder what exactly I did learn!

Perhaps you learned how to learn?

I recall dissecting an eyeball in year 8 and a few other things.

The secondary school I went to was a complete joke when it came to having teachers that were capable of teaching. Looking back I fail to believe they were qualified.

I think that's the key, what you use in your daily life. I didn't do biology at school, but I did it when I was nursing and I'm still really good at biology/anatomy related stuff having used it in care and with the dogs.

I remember a biology lesson when a mouse was being passed around. When it eventually got into my hands it decided to have a piss.

I also remember throwing a rolled up paper ball from the back of the class into the rubbish bin at the front. Must have been about 35 feet. Even the teacher was impressed

I also learnt to read and write somewhere along the line .......very handy.

Apart from that Ian Dury pretty well covers it

Like most above, I recall bits and pieces - none of them of any particular relevance. I went to a mixture of elementary schools on Army bases, local French and later Tunisian schools, several very good New England private (public for Brits) boarding schools (from which I was unceremoniously booted on both occasions), and the last three years in public High School. I can't say I retained much of the information ingested. After three years in the Paras, where I learned quite a lot, I then went to a pretty good University, in which I learned little other than becoming a recognized expert in the disassembly of halter tops and miniskirts, the location of every party in town, and the location of the best beer prices. I do remember my French, but I lived that rather than just studying it. Math and science, other than Biology courses which helped in medic training later in life, turned out to be precisely the total waste of time I anticipated. I always loved History, but I learned that on my own, by doing and reading.

Cumulo Nimbus for some strange reason.

about the kitchen triangle (fridge, cooker & sink)
Never heard of that, What's that about? must have been after I left.
Wonder if it has anything to the fact I nearly fried myself when I came home really really drunk and had to bust the kitchen window to get in and put one hand on the frinde and one on the stove while dripping wet and lying on the benchtop and nearly fried myself.

It’s true – for the time that I’ve spent in school, it’s shocking how little I know. I cant remember many relevant things that I’ve learned.

I assume I have learned some basic things in school – writing, making calculations – basics that have made it possible to learn all that I learned in life outside school. But these few things do not explain all these years in school.

Later, when my own son was in his teens and having some problems going to school, we taught him at home, and in less than 20% of the time spent at school we did it all at home.

I have come to the conclusion that we need schools to keep our kids busy while we are out working. Keep them busy and keep them off the job market.

And things are getting even worse now, as in most countries the teaching methodology in schools is 80 years old, while society has developed, as have our children, with global travel, internet, smart phones, to name a few.

I remember at primary school ,the teacher had loads of toys/ games/sweets to distribute :
the method was to be an auction !
Out came the cardboard money, shared out equally.

The auction started , wild bidding from my fellow pupils ensued for the first lots.
Clever me decided to save my cash and watch the mayhem.

Sure enough, soon everyone's skint except me and one other kid ; and there's still a pile of stuff , Including a tasty car racing set.

The teacher notices this , and also that her favourite pupils are skint , and so she hands out the money she's taken again to the poor kids .
Result - I ended getting far less stuff than the other kids and no fast cars .

So I learned 2 things at school :
1 That life aint fair and
2 If you have money spend it as fast as possible .

Remember my 'times-tables' that's pretty hard-wired in there. I think a lot of the time you only remember your earliest formative learning experiences. I know that even Primary school managed to get us to enjoy books / reading at the time, so fair enough.

We dissected a rat and mine was pregnant.

I liked languages, geography, literature and biology. I hated maths, chemisty and physics.

Getting drunk and stoned for the first time.

I also made some good life long friends.

I learned that Students like adults hunt and find the weaker ones.

Abuse starts at an early age.

Teachers are part of the treachery.

    Don't dare be different.

    Never one up the teacher.

Most of all I found it more to my liking to be thrown out of class than attending.

Other than getting a degree for attendance, can't say that the experience was educational. Simply a matter of out lasting...

    Work is the real subject.

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that Washington never told a lie
I learned that soldiers seldom die
    I learnd that everybody's free
And thats what the teacher said to me
And thats what I learned in school today,
thats what I learned in school.

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned the policemen are my friends
I learned that justice never ends
I learned that murderes pay for their crimes,
Even if we make a mistake sometimes
And thats what I learned in school today,
Thats what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that war is not so bad
I learned about the great once we had had
We fought in Germany and in France
And some day I might get my chance.
And thats what I learned in school today,
Thats what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
    Dear little boy of mine?

I learned our goverment must be strong
It's always right and never wrong!
Our leaders are the finest men
And we elect them again and again
And thats what I learned in school today,
Thats what I learned in school
