Apps for my new 'stupid' phone?

My 4 1/2 year old Nokia E71 carked it on Saturday so i went out to get it repaired and on the way decided fuckit, I'll get one of them there fancy smart phones.
Being kind of spur of the moment I didn't have any time to research and decided to go for a not too expensive but apparently quite well spec'd Sony Experia SP M35h.
So far it's nothing but a pain in the arse but I'm sure a lot of that is down to me not being familiar with the whole android (4.1.2) smartphone swipe face style, it's becoming more intuitive, but the fact is so far it does fuck all that the E71 didn't do simpler.
Battery seems crap but my biggest problem is downloading apps.
Google maps, skype, adobe acrobat, all no problem to download to the nokia but no matter what I try with this thing I just can't download anything and anything I do i get the message that I am now downloading xxxxx but that I haven't visited google playstore on this device.
Nothing at all downloads and there is no download progress bar.
Everytime i try to download the google playstore app all I get is a list of downloads (none of them the playstore app,) and if I try to download I get the message I mentioned above, so I try to visit or download the app and it all fucking starts again, just going around in circles.
    Any suggestions?
So far I reckon it's a piece of shit, I like to love my technology but I'm just not finding the love for this one.
Can't find how to access the pics and video on the memory card transfered from the other phone (no obvious intuitive solution).
It's also not 3G which for some reason I would have assumed it would have been, not that it really matters.
So far it's just managed to annoy me.
Any hints or suggestions to assist in my transition to the high tech world of smart phones welcome, cheers.
Throw it in the sea, drop it out the window and hurl it violently in the direction of the wall have all been considered already.
Apologies to kods if there's a sub forum somewhere this should be in, I considered multimedia but that seemed focused on computers.

yes, you need to be logged in to google to get the best out of these buggers.

ive had a sony smartphone for 6 months now, took a couple of months to figure it all out.

get lookout antivirus, advanced task manager, file commander, clean master.
look them up on your pc, then get them free from playstore if you like what they can do.

i wouldnt be without the thing now, and i had promised myself that i would never get a smartphone, being quite happy with 800baht nokias.

if your battery life is poor, turn off such things as wireless, location devices, gps, etc.
only turn them on when you need them. there are free apps that will do this for you.

I think google play should already be on your phone..it is a google android phone..go look for it and log into it with a google account. Your phone is 3G but you need a sim card that has your data plan on..you pay extra for it.

Well you need a data plan for 3G and you also need an APN to connect to it. Best done by a visit to the True/AIS/whatever shop.

Get Opera Browser and turn on Off Road mode. If it's anything like here the government block William Hill but Off Road mode uses Opera's servers so it comes straight through.

Have you ticked the box on your phone download from unknown sources.
As mentioned TuneIn Radio (app) is excellent can listen to BBC Radio 4 whilst in Thailand.
Try Clearing your Play Store's data and cache.
Go to settings > applications > all tab > Play Store.
    Now hit clear data.
Reboot your device and try again.

That's the problem, I don't have Google play on my phone at all and don't seem to be able to download it. Why do I need it to install Skype ?

Hang in there mate, I went through exactly the same thing a few months ago and wanted to frisbee my new "smart phone" clear off the f'king balcony!. A week or two of grief and some useful apps later (once you suss out how to download them) and you'll never look back.

if it is a genuine sony with android you will have google play installed on it

the reason you need it is the app is only available at the google play store if you use it how they intended.

you can go into security settings and allow unsigned apps to be installed and then find the apk file on the web , copy it to your SD card and install.

Google Play Store is blocked in China, Koojo on that Chinese version Sony you have .
You have to use there Chinese Store.

Samsung Galaxy S4 i9508 - no Google Play Store

Got my brand new S4 this morning and it's looking great! As I'm living in Shanghai I got the i9508 (China Mobile) variant. To my surprise there is no Google Play Store on the device and even though I managed to manually install it, it won't run. After a bit of googling I found that this is because it's simply blocked/not available on the Chinese version. There is a Chinese app store full of Chinese apps, but I don't know Chinese so those are pretty useless for me.
Baldrick has shown you another way to download the apps, but I guess Pirate Bay is blocked for you too.

Better hand it over to the wife

I recently bought a S3 in China, and Play Store wouldn't work. After a firmware upgrade and Play Store 'uninstall-reinstall' it's working.

But some apps are blocked in China, so I put in SIM cards from Taiwan, Thailand or South Africa to get them.

Always a way around these cheeky censors..

flash cynogenMOD firmware onto it - you will find it and instructions on xda-developers.com .

it is very easy - back up your bits ( as you have not used it much that will be easy )

then you download a couple of files , copy them to your SD card , then boot the device while holding a combination of buttons , and then navigate to where the firmware is , select it and let it flash the new firmware
