Tax and Looper were on the mark. &, the flight from Oman to Bkk was 155 rials whereas the flight from Oman to Colombo was 73 rials. The additional Cathy Pacific flight from Colombo to Bangkok was 4,500 baht (about 50 rials). The hotel I booked cost a miserly 25 rials for the 2 nights. That's around the same cost for the mini holiday as just the flight alone. Thus, I will be telling the missus that the direct flight was expensive, I decided to get a cheaper flight with a stopover, but I could not connect straight on to Bkk (which is true...ish), so I'll be there for 48 hours or so. Job done. & pretty much follows my initial train of though anyways.

I didn't mean 20 minutes from the beach... I meant 3 minutes from the beach; 20 minutes from the airport to the beach.

I will be having a very gay time by the sounds of things.

I've been in the desert for 10 months... When I get home, I'll likely be busy in Bkk and Nakhon Nowhere for the 6 week break - surely you wouldn't begrudge me 2 days beach time, would you?

Really, not sure where you live and what you're used to paying for your LBs... 250 baht for the ride from the airport to the hotel 10kms away, doesn't sound too expensive; 800 baht for the hotel won't ruin the bank either.

I went to negombo about 20 years ago, Pleasant enough then, Fok knows what its like now,It was more of a fishing village then. Hikkadua was the "IN" place to go. it doesnt sound ideal from what other posters are saying.

It's 20 mins from the airport; arrive around 5pm, walk up the beach road, have some food and beer then see how I feel. If I'm in the mood I can head off somewhere further afield and extend my stay. If not, then it'll do for a short break. It's somewhere that I wanted to visit, and if I like it then I'll go back another time...

I had a work-related story cooked up for the GF about why I am off to Korea. She knew my previous GF (whom I am going to visit) was a Korean and I was not looking forward to telling her I was off to the land of Kimchi as she is too nice to lie to and I knew she would suspect anyway. I briefly told her about the trip last week by SMS (the cowards way). When I saw her this weekend she asked me details on my 'work trip'. I had the story worked out but in the heat of the moment I just didn't have the heart to reel it off to her face so I just shrugged and looked into the distance. She did not mention it again the rest of the weekend and seemed to have put it out of her mind.

Anyway, if you've never been to SL, it is a beautiful place - some good shopping and the people are lovely.
Spend most of my time in Kandy when I'm there - always nice to catch a game of rugby, the guys are not too foul!

Colombo - see if you can catch a cricket match at the CCC - nice experience

Here's a thought - why don't you take your wife to the beach in Thailand for a few days?
