Your wife's/so's first trip to your country

I'm on a work-about here in the USA and the wife flys over to see me in about 18 hours. Just got off the phone with here and she is quiverring with excitement. Don't think that will end when she gets here. She'll be blown away by polite driving, cars that stop for people APPROACHING cross-walks, paper towels in the bathrooms, dogs on leashes, people picking up dog poo, good service in restaurants, sidewalks you can walk on, total lack of garbage anywhere, and on and on.

Curious as to what others have experienced and what I should expect. The weather here is about 19C so she will likely freeze within the first hour! My fleece pull-over will be handy but it is about twenty sizes too big!

"The air smells clean", and then just bliss for weeks as the difference in the two places becomes all so clear.

Oh, say it isn't so! Never thought of that! I'm actually pretty svelte compared to your usual expat but I have to admit, there are many handsome lads here.

She doesn't have a lot of family to miss but some spicy sum tum is going to be a tall order. I've made friends with a Thai restaurant owner here from Si Saket so maybe he can muster up some special edition. His food is great and I always get a freebie as I order in Thai. Quite a few Thai uni students eat there so the wife might find some agreeable food. Haven't seen any sum tum though but definitely will take the better half there as soon as we get settled.

Good luck to her mate ,, bless her I am sure she is excited .

Mine was but after nearly 6 years here now ( I,m amazed she has stayed that long ) its worn off a bit ,, but she still loves to go out and about and is very observant about different things.

Tip ,,,,,,,she will love to Sawatt de ka with a few Thais after a while and sit on the floor and eat som tum with em ,,, what I did was the last time I was over in Thai before she came over I went to a Thai sticker shop and had some made for the back of my car in the UK ,,,,,,, now the idea being when I parked it up hopefully it would attract some interest from some other Thais for her ,,,,,,,it worked a treat !

All the best to you both

Mine thinks the UK all looks like the Cotswolds and everyone shops at farmers markets. I'll not be taking her any time soon, so I'll not enlighten her yet.

Thai food is available everywhere in the UK (the ingredients) I'm guessing it would be the same in the US. She just needs to learn to cook ASAP.

As mentioned, the cold and the food were the two main factors for my wife but both are easily over come with the right attitude. It all depends on how much she wants to be there in the first place, and what kind of character she has.

Long term, she will probably miss Thailand a lot more than you ever missed the US. She will be hanging out for a holiday home in a couple of years.

I doubt most Thais even notice the differences. They might just have a strange feeling that something is different there but they can't put their finger on what it is. In Thailand, they don't notice the crazy driving, cars that almost hit people crossing the street, lack of TP in the bathrooms, street dogs everywhere, people pissing next to the bus stops, fly-ridden restaurants, ankle-busting sidewalks and garbage everywhere.

My wife didn't care much for the US when we visited. She just wanted her somtam and lazy Thai lifestyle. If your wife is modern, educated and adventurous, who knows she may just like it. Most Thais probably like it for the money opportunities more than the quality, hygiene and law enforcement.

My wife was asking for ages to go and see England in the winter.

I took her to the ice bar on Samuii (the place is made of ice).

    That cured her.

Complete waste of time. If I wanted an Americanized Thai wife I'd go to L.A. for one.

You can get anything in L.A.

My Mrs first trip to the UK was in a frosty March and we spent nearly a month in North Yorks.

She enjoyed it overall, but she wore enough clothing to make her look like Bib the Michelin Man when we went out.

She missed Thai food a bit, I probably missed it as much, but she lost her mind when she saw the prices at the local Thai-ish restaurant so we trotted off to the supermarket and she got everything she needed to make some good meals for us and visitors.

We've been back a few times since and nobody asks how I am or the usual pleasantries, they just ask when Mme QC is going to cook again and if they should bring wine or beer. Naturally my answer is 'both'.

we've only been back once. and that was for a wedding so we were very rushed.

    Things she liked:

    Primark,
    Wetherspoons food,
    Marks and Spencers
    Eggs benedict

    Things not so much:

    the price of taxis,
    the price of trains
    the price of hotels
    the cold
    the rain

Why can't she make her own food?

I'm sure the USA has such things called Asian Shops or Asian Supermarkets.
