My wife lived in the US (Florida) for 4 years with me. She enjoyed it. Nobody mentioned above but I loved the 1st time she showered with the shower curtain pulled open soaking the entire bathroom with 1/2 inch of water. Didn't realize there was no drain in the middle of the room lol. She worked in a Thai restaurant and that made it livable for her. She was so depressed after a few months of living there with no family. Didn't get the job until 6 months of living there. She is very, very close with her family so the homesickness was terrible until she started working.

I loved watching her grow and her learning how to live in another country it was a learning experience for me also.

11 years ago my wife to be landed at Darwin airport before I whisked her away for the 1,000 kms drive home to the middle of nowhere. We ran out of daylight half way so we rolled out the swag on the side of the road, lit a camp fire and watched the stars.

Given this type of introduction you can understand why here first questions were along the lines of:

    Where is everyone?
Where are the houses / towns?
Where are we going to buy food?
    Who owns all this land?
    We are sleeping in that?
    Wow - so many stars!
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

Surprisingly enough there just happened to be a Thai female living in the condo/townhouse complex I've been in since 1995 when we returned last year ... I would guess she's 30ish ... the wife has never attempted to talk to her again because the woman would only speak in English. I'm thinking she may be the daughter of a Thai who married a farang many years ago and brought her here with her mother.

    TLazer,
Has she asked about all the cars parked out in front of peoples houses? When we first arrived she thought everybody was having parties everyday. a great majority of houses here have 5 to 7 cars parked out front and in the driveway all the time. She was also wondering why none of the houses have gates around the front. She said" So people can just walk up to your door?"

    All good funny stuff

Figures, the public wants public transportation, but won't pay the taxes that are needed to produce it.

Have you taken her down highway 1 to Big Sur or further on down to L.A. yet? Its a great ride.

The first time she experienced chili withdrawals. I never knew what it was at first but general short-tempered and depressed. Make sure you know the local Thai supermarket or restaurant.

Yep. Yesterday eating seafood at the Athenian in Seattle she jokingly asked if they had fish sauce naam prik naam bpla. Had to tell her to be patient as the owner of a Thai restaurant promised to fix me up with some. I knew it was coming! The guy also makes his own naam prik da dang (red eye hot sauce) so I'm sure when I take her there they will have a long session.

In Bangkok my Thai friends cousin came over from Switzerland where he'd grown up and been educated. He couldn't speak Thai or english. Poor guy must have had to smile a lot when being spoken to in Thai all the time. Funny at times, it was!

You can get a lot of Thai stuff at Uwajimaya supermarket in downtown Seattle ... Chinatown area. You might also look for a chain store called Saar in your area ... They have nearly everything.

Why are Thais so obsessed with Thai food when they travel overseas? Thai food is one of the highlights of a trip to Thailand, so why don't Thais reciprocate when they travel to their spouses home country. There is a great big world out there full of interesting tastes,...

^You're forgetting the Thai attitude to the world. Everything Thai is superior, number one etc.

Even rich Thais crave peasant Isaan food overseas. How many Thais overseas talk about ''mai mee somtam'' when you ask then how it is to be away from Thailand

I never heard any Brits in Thailand moaning about the lack of baked beans and fish and chips...oh hang on, I did.

We are already exposed and used to different tastes at home. What do Thais know about foreign food? Maybe McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Our Thai neighbour is very well adjusted to european food besides preparing very good Thai food herself. Like my Filipina wife she refuses to even think of moving back to Thailand.

Which, to many middle class/Hi-so Thai parents in Thailand is something to let your kids gorge on, even if they turn into little fatties. I noticed many of these on my last trip to Bangkok, can't imagine it's on the decrease as it's 'inter' food, good for their status.

Then again, looking back, I can't recall my mum eating much western food. at home our main evening meal was always something Thai or Asian. When my dad cooked, it was a disaster. My mum let him cook the rice, that's all. The old Winson Hong supermarket in Finsbury Park used to get a lot of Thai stuff for my mum, me and my sister were often sent there with a shopping bag to get it.

When relatives did come over, I remember us all getting taken to a local Greek restaurant, a carvery, and the local Indian. This was 30 years ago! They enjoyed it, probably cos the bill was astronomical which they took as high quality!

I do have to say I am was a bit bothered initially about always having to find Thai specific foods and ingredients so she could cook. It seems almost like an obsession. While I must admit I love her cooking I have worked diligently to mixing it up a bit for her. Not with "Crap Fast food" but different Fish recipes, Crawdads, Viet noodle soup, BBQ'in a good set of pork ribs. So far she has been very receptive but cannot stand the smell of beef. She likes the Mexican Shrimp soup and from time to time craves a good NY style pizza. In fairness though I know in Thailand while not an obsession I did long for some good tortilla chips, Salsa, Pepper jack cheese, Crackers, NY Steak and some goooood Tequila. I always had to travel to a Villa Market for that and she would roll her eyes on the cost........

What the girlfriend will do while in the states is mix her own spicy seafood chili sauce (lime/garlic/fish sauce/chili) and take it with her to different restaurants (or bring home leftovers) in a small Tupperware. Any fish served to her is absolutely wonderful (to her) after she dips it.

^That's actually downright disrespectful and sorry, ignorant. Not directed at you personally. I do know Thais who are like this, not my friends, and at the time I just couldn't fathom it out. It's like a farang taking picallili, HP sauce or marmite to a Thai food stall, almost.

Not the right thread but reminded me to give anyone who wants it a heads up about this restaurant.

In Bangkok, not cheap - but the best Thai food I've ever had here

I wonder just how many of you Gentlemen have had the for thought to install a Bum gun in the shitter so your Terak can wash her date instead of having to push poo around her bottom. ?

I would say this is a truly disturbing part of being in the West for a Thai person as after using the bum gun all there life shitter paper is revolting and unhygienic.

If you guys want a easy transition I would consider this a pre requisite for happiness and contentment.

    Clean Botty = Happy Terak.

I installed one in my gaff years ago , piss easy and costs nothing.

    Just a thought, carry on.

You have got to be joking, right? My wife gets her Papaya on Thursdays and Sundays from a Filipino store in Silverdale, WA ... On the rare occasions we get there too late we head to Saar for the Mexican papaya.

Kinda surprised to see you post this.

When papaya is in short supply green cucumber can be a substitute. Has a similar crunchy texture and is fibrous like the green papaya.

Agree with those that say the Thai needs to learn to cook. The ingredients can be found in most large western cities.

My kids love it when I cook, because they know they're not going to get boring Thai food.

It was the Midget's birthday a few weeks ago, so she did 2 stuffed ducks with roast potatoes and a couple of other bits and pieces. The Outlaws couldn't eat it because it didn't taste like rotting roadkill.

I reciprocated when my brother in law had a going away party a week or so later by dozing in the car with the AC on. I was driving, so couldn't drink. Have you ever tried socialising with Isaan Thais when sober?
