I have a rabbit in the cupboard, but I also sometimes use a waiters friend.
how about you?

corks are gay
I just make sure i buy a screw top bottle
once on a picnic I made a mistake , and found I had a corker.
So I got a sturdy stick and shoved the cork right into the bottle
took a while , but i showed the bastard !
same as blue, would press it inside...
i hate that pocket knifes, with the cork screw... its really the last thing on earth anyone needs...
Very good point. The problem with a metal cap though is that sometimes it might interfere with the wine. I would point out though that this is a thread about which cork screw you use, so to take the topic off line is not allowed and frowned upon.
So assuming you have once bought a decent bottle of wine in your life, ever, what method of cork screw did you use? Or did the butler do it?
No edit function - so previous post was to Blue.Originally Posted by alitongkat
Ali - have you tried pushing the cork in with a stick?
it was possibly a ballpen, dont really remember, long ago... it takes time and pieces split off...
If you have a shark sturdy knife, and push it in at an incline, and can then twist and lift the cork moving the un sharp side of the knife forward, you will usually get the cork out in one piece, and quickly. Heard some horror stories of people messing that act up though.
Funny you should raise the topic, I have quite a collection of corkscrews.
I like the scewpull:....
...and use it for all but the best wines, or very dry corks. For these I use the traditional waiters friend, of which I have several....eg
I also have a couple of lever type corkscrews similar to below:
...which I have used on occasion but tend to stay in the bottom drawer...
its a good topic... as we are getting older, and muscle mass reduces, things wont open smoothly anymore...
if you push a hole into a screw lid, so the vaccum is gone, it can be opened easily... just want to say...
did you guys swap that for your sandbox shovels at some point ?
Vanilla enough I guess.Originally Posted by alitongkat
Classy - this is right up my alley and I would willingly spend a couple hundred quid on one of these. I worked banquetting in Aberdeen at uni and had to open 2000 bottles of wine once - the metal on the handle of my waiters friend cut me something horrid and that looks awesome.
rubbish , corks being gay have a far higher interference rateOriginally Posted by pseudolus
ever heard anyone say '' waiter I say , bring me another bottle this this one's metaled...''
ok i'll play the game
before screw tops i used to have a ballerina style corkscrew ,
I rather like the German Mermaid corkscrew from the early 1900's
A Belgian one might be to some poster's liking...
besides blues "anna", alessi has another one with a parrot...
a Screwpull is the way to go, fantastic to use and effortless
Waiter's Friends are a bit dodgy, but I have only used ones given as publicity objects (they have the name on the side etc)...not those bloody Chinese ones though
use waiters friend..have had occasional probs with chipping glass...solved that now.
.....just buy Chateau Cardboard.
I like the co2 powered ones, handy for a quick snuff job if she turns out to be a bunny boiler.
The one on my Swiss army knife gets a fair bit of use.
Have several of these from Christmas gifts.
Can't afford wine in bottles that have a cork or plastic 'cork' so they collect dust.
Lotus sells some nice stuff in a box!
Approx 90% of NZ wine comes with screw caps....even the expensive stuff.

Anyway those fancy cork screws with all the gadgets on them are a time consuming business.
No reason to chip glass with a waiters friends; if you do you are either doing it wrong, or buying crap wine in crap bottles.
