Anyone here homesick for Taiwan?
Anyone here homesick for Taiwan?
Of course, I miss the food.
But it is not just the food, because I miss everything about Taiwan, except the traffic, and maybe the poor urban planning.
I miss the people, and the food, but it is more than that.
Taipei has been my home for over 30 years.
I miss the mountains,
I miss the oceans, or one ocean and a strait
There are plenty more things that I miss.
possibly
i've never been there
could you expand?
edit: you expanded
I quite liked Block K (or the block), the Sherwood & nearby Ruth's Chris, and that very Japenese area in the mountains outside Taipei with hot springs.
Never been there. Are still pictures of the generalissimo everywhere, the Muslim lover, Tibetan killer, who cost China more lives than Mao?
The big G didn't feature much in my Taipei, although I did stay at this stalinist KMT monstrosity called The Grand a few times.
Taiwanese people love telling you they are the real Chinese- commie China moved away from that during the cultural revolution, according to their version. They say their food is the best of Chinese food, and they are right. Their tea too. They proudly say they have the best Chinese museum in the world, and they are right about that too- looted of course, when the KMT fled China. I liked Taipei.
Snake alley had a certain charm. But I think OP has been no nearer to taiwan than, say, malaysia.
what are you doing for christmas spam?
I hope to head for the mountains, and see the people who live there.
I think it is about a 4 hour trip from here.
I met a girl here who invited me,
And I met her father, too.
He says he speaks Chinese,
But his dialect is unintelligible to me,
And it is lucky his daughter speaks some English.
That would be first on my list, because I have always wanted to visit there.

That is a very old photo, and I think it is on the way to NeiHu from Taipei. You need to drive in. These buildings all do not look the same.
Peoples attitudes in Taiwan reflect those of the US, mostly. Or, I would say the attitudes of the more educated people in the US.
A surprising very high percentage of young people in Taiwan have attended university in the US. Very many are Phds. And two stayed at my house while they got their PhDs from Penn.
Yes, Taiwan is a great country.
And so is Thailand.
We have many mountain people in Taiwan.
They are Christians.
They beat their wives.
And get drunk on rice wine every day.
Sometimes, the Aborigines in South Taiwan,
Will get drunk on rice wine they make in their kitchens,
Then they will pull their girlfriends down the road by the hair.
Yes, I am homesick for Taiwan.
But not the hairpulling, so much.
1. The Grand Hotel was the best hotel anywhere.
2. Then, they purposely set fire to it, so that they could get kickbacks rebuilding the roof and the rooms. Of course, they replaced what was once very beautiful with what is now very ugly, and it is now no better than a short time hotel.
3. The tea in Taiwan is the best, anywhere.
4. The food in Taiwan is garbage, as I have already stated at length on TV
5. The museum is crap, because it is poorly run. You can't see much now. But you could, 30 years ago, without all the screamin crowds.
6. The Taiwanese are not Chinese, really. They are a different culture, although they are still ethnic Chinese. They like to say they also have much other blood mixed into their makeup.
7. I do not know the big G, either. I do know that the G spot is also unknown among most girls in Taiwan. Or, they may know it but it is not discussed, or maybe it is discussed, but not important.
I have been here, and this is a nice place to soak your head.
zero focus: 2/1949, Taiwan.
